The Appeal
The XJ40 is being reappraised by enthusiasts, and with good reason. These well-engineered cars cleverly mixed the classic XJ looks with advanced technologically, most notably the digital dashboards fitted to upmarket versions like this highly presented 3.6L Daimler. These cars provide classic character with reliable usability.
That dependability is down to improved build quality and the superb AJ6 3.6L straight six engine. Not that this car has tested either because its quartet of keepers have covered barely more than 40,000 miles in its 38 years. The result is a very well preserved car in a desirable colour scheme, with some elevated Daimler accoutrements. The cream leather cabin, trimmed in walnut and with plush separate rear seats, is a particular draw.
The vendor acquired the car in 2024 and tells us that the previous keeper dry stored it for 15 years. Recent work has included four new Pirelli tyres and a fuel sender. It will be sold with a fresh MOT.
The vendor says:
“On the road this Daimler performs as it should with an impressive amount of performance after nearly 40 years when required. The gearbox changes as it should as well as the kick down. The ride is smooth and comfortable free of any noises. It is a joy to drive. This vehicle came with all extra options at the time of purchase.”
