The Appeal

Lightweight, rev-hungry, beautifully engineered and fine-handling little sports cars are very much Honda’s forte. Few cars in their modern history are such fine examples of this philosophy as the CRX. Finished with Honda’s usual, meticulous eye for detail and great fun to drive, these lovely little retro coupés are becoming tricky to find – especially in good, unmodified condition.
Which is where this particular example comes in. With just under 29,000 miles on the clock, plus a comprehensive service and maintenance record, this is a spectacularly uncommon vehicle. Add to that the excellent way it presents and the fact that it appears to be completely stock and unmodified, and you have something nearly unsurpassed. If you’re after an exceptional example of an 80s performance car, then this really does fit the bill perfectly. It may well be the best one we’ve seen.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in April 1988
  • Bought from Steels Westgate Honda in Hereford
  • Four registered owners from new
  • The first two owners were husband and wife, while the third was their grandson, so this is a "single family" ownership vehicle
  • Current registered owner since July 2018
  • 28,814 miles from new, verified by service and MOT record
  • Less than 600 miles covered since April 2018
  • MOT to March 2024
  • Large history file, including numerous receipts and invoices for servicing and maintenance
  • Owner’s handbooks and service record included
  • Previous V5 and current V5c are present
  • Photographic record of the car over the years

The Interior

  • Handsome grey fabric upholstery, all of which appears to be in excellent condition
  • Front sports seats with grey/black/red striped centre sections and ‘CRX’ embroidered headrests, which show no significant wear or damage
  • The rear bench is trimmed in black vinyl and appears to be in near new condition
  • Grey carpeting is fitted through the cabin space and boot area, with contrasting black floor mats, all present very well, with no notable threading, staining or damage
  • The door cards and other internal trim items are in very good order, with no major marks or scuffs, and no damage we could discern
  • Factory fitted metal sunroof
  • Electric windows and door mirrors
  • Original radio/cassette system
  • The vendor tells us there are no issues with any of the cabin’s functions and that everything works just as it should
  • Practical boot space contains the original parcel shelf, which is undamaged, as well as a spacesaver spare and tool roll
  • Lifting the boot carpet, we can see that the floor and wheel well look to be in immaculate condition, with no evidence of corrosion or damage apparent
  • It’s not often we can describe a car’s interior as “near pristine”, but that’s what this is

The Exterior

  • Original Polar White paintwork, which has an excellent finish and a fine gloss
  • We could not identify any issues, blemishes or notable marks in regard to the paintwork
  • All of the bodywork is clean and straight with even and consistent panel gaps, crisp lines and no signs of damage or corrosion we could see
  • The external trim and badging, including the glass and light lenses, is all in very fine condition, with nothing missing, broken or significantly worn
  • The car rides on the correct 14-inch, seven-hole factory-spec alloy wheels, which have a silver finish and show no evidence of kerbing or lacquer peel
  • All the wheels are shod in a matched set of ‘Landsail’ tyres
  • Underneath, the car presents in exceptionally clean and solid condition, with straight, undamaged and corrosion free floors and sills
  • It appears that the fuel tank, tank straps and exhaust system have all been replaced

The Mechanics

  • 1,590cc DOHC, 16-valve, four-cylinder ‘D16A9’ engine driving the front wheels
  • Manual five-speed transmission
  • The only MOT advisory was in regard to the exhaust back box, so the vendor has fitted a new item
  • Under the bonnet, the engine bay is beautifully clean, with no corrosion we could see, and no signs of any issues
  • We’re assured by the vendor that the car starts, runs and drives just as it should, with no reported mechanical or electrical issues

Summary

Rarely does a sports coupé from the 80s come along that’s been kept in such original and clean condition. A testament to its previous owners, this smart little CRX is a simply delightful modern classic, and we think its new owners are probably going to do very well at this year’s shows.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
