The Appeal

The Peugeot 205 is perhaps one of the most recognizable vehicles of all time, with the 205 GTI variants stealing the spotlight in terms of desirability. First introduced in 1984, the GTI models would become Peugeot’s well-received flagship hot hatch, as many of us will likely remember fondly.

The 205 GTI received a number of developments throughout its lifetime, seeing both 1.6 and 1.9 engine configurations available across different phases. This particular example is a phase 1.5 model and boasts the most powerful 1.6L engine available, producing an exciting 115hp. Although this model has a lower displacement figure than the 1.9L variants, it is widely regarded as the preferred GTI, capable of revving much more freely and providing a more engaging driving experience.
Today, these cars are becoming exceptionally rare, with original low mileage examples such as this beauty being near impossible to find. The 205 GTI is surrounded with nostalgia and is easily one of the greatest hot hatches of all time, making it a fantastic choice for a modern classic. If you’re looking to relive the 80s in style, or are seeking the perfect addition to your collection, this is the car for you.

The History and Paperwork

  • 2 former keepers
  • Just 60K on the clock
  • Original example
  • Very well maintained
  • Extensive paperwork dating back to 1988
  • Stamped service booklet
  • V5C present
  • Original handbooks
  • Dry stored in a garage
  • Less than 100 miles since the last service in June 2021
First registered in 1988, this Peugeot 205 GTI has only covered a mere 60,492 miles and has been truly treasured by each of its 3 owners. The car actually covered the majority of its mileage within the first decade on the road and has since covered very few miles on an annual basis. Despite seeing so little use for the vehicle’s age, the car has been meticulously serviced and very well maintained, as the paperwork will reflect.

Although the car hasn’t required much in recent years, spending a great deal of its time off the road, the current owner has ensured that the vehicle has been given everything as required. Key items of recent maintenance include rust proofing in 2010, a new timing belt in 2011, and replaced brake components in 2015. A quick peek at the paperwork will also reveal regular servicing, with the most recent service taking place than 100 miles ago, in June 2021.
The vehicle comes with a fantastic amount of paperwork & history and has clearly been well cared for over the years. The current owner has carefully collated all details of servicing and history, dating all the way back to 1988. The paperwork also includes the original handbooks, as well as a stamped service booklet, near up to date with the current mileage.
Also included is a vast collection of invoices covering previous servicing and maintenance, the V5C document, and previous MOT certificates. In addition to the above, the car also comes with the relevant Haynes manual & an original Esso torch.

The Interior

  • Original interior
  • Extremely well preserved
  • Striking red carpet and details
  • Factory fitted sunroof
  • 3-spoke GTI steering wheel
  • Original Phillips radio
Opening the door to this 205 GTI is genuinely like stepping back in time. It’s almost unbelievable just how spectacular the original interior looks after all this time, and you’re instantly reminded of just how well the car has been cared for.

Both front seats are in excellent condition, with only the most minor amount of wear beginning to show on the outer bolster of the driver’s seat. Both rear seats, on the other hand, appear to have perhaps never even been used and almost look as though they have just rolled off the production line.
The steering wheel, dashboard, and door cards are in an equally impressive state, as are the striking red carpet and sleek headliner. In addition to the above, not only are all dials and controls in full working order (other than the cassette player), but all contact points show absolute minimal signs of use.
It certainly isn’t unreasonable to suggest that you would be extremely hard-pressed to find any roadgoing car that has been as well preserved and cared for as this particular example.

The Exterior

  • Original finish
  • Superb condition
  • Original pepperpot alloy wheels
This Peugeot 205 GTI is in spectacular condition and presents its factory finish near-perfectly. As retro hatchback aficionados will know, finding a straight example that shows off its original finish this well after all those years is virtually unheard of.
The white paintwork retains a great level of shine and boasts a finish that would very easily rival the majority of vehicles on the road today. All trim pieces, red pinstriping, badges, and lights follow suit and help the car appear as though it has been frozen in time. The only notable defects on the exterior are an ever-so-slight amount of damage to the driver’s rear plastic trim, and a missing front driver’s mudguard.
It wouldn’t be an 80’s hot hatch if it didn’t also sit on a set of pepperpot alloy wheels now would it? All 4 wheels are in original condition and are only a light refurbishment away from being brought back to concourse condition if desired.

The Mechanics

  • 1.6L 115bhp inline 4 engine
  • Manual gearbox
  • Drives faultlessly
  • Just 60k on the clock
  • A proper hot hatch experience
  • Very well maintained & cared for
Buyers will be pleased to know that this Phase 1.5 205 GTI fires up right away and performs absolutely brilliantly. With just 60K on the clock, the car has hardly needed anything over the years and requires absolutely nothing to be enjoyed by the lucky new owner.
Those who were fortunate to grow up in the golden era of hot hatches will likely be able to reminisce about the 205 GTI and its quirky nature. In true ’80s fashion, the car weighs about as much as a baked beans can and boasts a truly impressive power to weight ratio. This is a hot hatch that will gladly rocket along a twisty B road and have you reliving your youth in no time at all.
With no known mechanical or electrical faults and a fantastic service record, this 205 GTI is sure to be a dependable weekend toy and will no doubt put a wild grin on your face from the moment you turn the key.

Summary

This Peugeot 205 GTI is one of the greatest examples of the retro hot hatch we all love, with similar vehicles being near impossible to find nowadays. The car has covered remarkably low miles, benefits from a care-filled past, is in original condition, and requires absolutely nothing to be enjoyed.

Whether you’re looking for a near-pristine addition to your collection, or just fancy stepping back in time with one of the greatest hot hatches ever produced, this 205 GTI should be at the very top of your list.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
