1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9

Highlights

  • Substantial history file dating back over three decades
  • Around £2,000 has recently been spent to ensure the finer details are exactly right
  • Used very sparingly during recent years, forming part of several collections
  • Advisory-free MOT until January 2025

The Appeal

Regarded by many as the ultimate classic hot hatchback - the Peugeot 205 GTI has accrued legendary status amongst us petrolheads. Adding a fizzy little engine to the sub-900 kilogram, front-wheel drive 205 proved an unassailable combination and for those seeking driving perfection, a GTI is an essential addition to your garage.
We can heartily recommend this 1988 1.9-litre example which is in lovely condition for its age. Since these cars were so fun and usable, many 205 GTIs racked up stratospheric milages and were quite literally driven into the ground. Not so here, however, as this Peugeot has been cherished by collectors for much of its life, enjoying a ‘no expense spared’ attitude to maintenance and only venturing out on special occasions. The vendor, who is also a car collector, has recently spent around £2,000 to get the last few finer details exactly as they should be. Its MOT runs until January 2025 and is free from advisories.
Seize this opportunity, as seldom is such a good, original and well-cared-for 205 GTI available.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK-supplied right-hand drive example
  • Accompanied by a wealth of invoices ranging from the early 1990s to the present day
  • V5C present
  • Ten former registered keepers
  • 82,075 miles indicated - which we understand is warranted by the history file
  • The vendor points out that from the early 2000s, the history shows it’s been barely used: with invoices up to around 2006 and some old MOT test certificates
  • No on-road miles have been covered from 2011 to 2021 as the car was part of a collection and not MOT-tested
  • The vendor acquired it in December 2021
  • The current MOT is advisory-free and runs until 17th January 2025

The Condition

  • Commendably original throughout
  • Smart white paintwork with few notable blemishes
  • The plastic exterior trims look to be in very good order for their age
  • The underside presents very well and has been kept clean
  • OEM alloy wheels shod with Pirelli Cinturato tyres
  • The original upholstery is well-preserved and lightly patinated
  • The driver’s outer seat bolster has split slightly and there is some wear to the carpet in the driver’s footwell
  • The controls, switches and instruments present beautifully
  • Recent new dashboard illumination
  • The luggage compartment is clean and smartly turned out

The Mechanics

  • 1.9-litre four-cylinder SOHC petrol engine with fuel injection
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • The vendor reports that it drives really well, benefiting from a lifetime of careful maintenance
  • All looks original and immensely smart under the bonnet
  • No advisories recorded during the past three MOT tests

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
