1989 Audi 200 Quattro Turbo

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rare model 200 Turbo
  • Big spec rebuilt engine
  • Uprated handling

THE APPEAL

Very much now a classic and extremely rare to see on the road, it is reported by the vendor that there are just six on the road at present, according to a well know website.
This Audi 200 Quattro Turbo has been with the seller for the past ten years and has been given a complete engine rebuild to a bigger spec, which is now thought to be somewhere between 230-250bhp. The suspension has also been upgraded to improve the handling and being galvanised bodywork this is all original and in excellent condition for the age. All in all, the mechanics have been taken care of, meaning it is a very usable car ready to be enjoyed.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • V5 is present
  • Registered 8th August 1989
  • Ten-year ownership
  • Owners handbooks present
  • Extensive history file
  • MOT valid until 12th April 2023
The Audi comes with an extensive history file filled with invoices and notes made over the past ten years. Also included are the original owner’s handbook and service book.
The car does have an MOT which is valid until the 12th April, 2023. The only reason the vendor is parting with the car, even after rebuilding the engine and suspension, is that he has purchased another 200 Quattro turbo but with the 20 valve engine; otherwise, this ten valve would be staying put.

THE INTERIOR

  • Original interior
  • Electric seats
  • Boost gauge
  • GPS Speedometer
Inside, the Audi remains very much in its original condition. The electric front seats are finished in leather and have some patina but fully work as they should. The rear seat is in good condition with very little wear to be seen. All four door cards are in good order with no obvious signs of any wear, and the switches on the driver's side are all working as they should and have very little wear to them.
The leather steering wheel is generally in good order, with just a slight amount of patina. Quite a common fault is that the odometer stops working, which is the case with this 200 Quattro. It is reported to work now and again, and the odometer is showing a reading of 181,572 miles, but this has not moved for some time, so the vendor has fitted a GPS speedometer to ensure he doesn’t get caught over the speed limit; also the clock LCD display is faulty. There is an additional analogue boost gauge fitted to monitor the uprated boost. The switchgear all looks to be in good condition and working as it should. The vendor has removed the air conditioning components, but the car's heater controls still operate correctly. An additional cold start button has been fitted, which ensures the car starts as it should after this is pressed.
The carpets are in good condition throughout, fitted with a set of mats to protect them, which are also in good order. Above, the headlining is free from any sagging or staining. In the boot is also nice and clean, with the spare wheel in place with a new tyre fitted. There is also a load liner from a MK5 Golf which works nicely.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Finished in Tornado Red
  • Original condition
  • Excellent tyres
Externally the Audi 200 Quattro Turbo is in really good condition for the year and mainly in original condition apart from the passenger rear door, which received some paint several years ago.
Starting at the front, the lights are all in good condition with no chips or cracks, and the headlights have been fitted with relays to improve their performance. The bumpers and side mouldings were once colour coded, but the paint has now been removed, and it has left some light scuffs in places. The bonnet aligns well with the grille and wing rails, with an even gap along each side.
Looking down the long flanks of the Audi, there is a small dink in the driver's side wing and on the quarter just below the fuel cap. The doors have an equal panel gap and open and close, as you would expect. The windows all around the car are in good condition, along with the seals and trims. Fitted with an electric sunroof, this opens as it should but needs a light hand when closing. Unfortunately, this has one of the drain holes blocked off with plasticine, as it is thought that the pipe has come off under the headlining.
At the rear, the lights and back panel are in good condition with no splits or cracks, and the boot badges are in place and in good condition. A three-piece boot spoiler is fitted, but the paint has split in several areas. The wheels are in excellent condition and have matching new 195/65/R15 tyres, which are winter tyres, including the spare.

THE MECHANICS

  • Fully rebuilt engine with a ported and polished cylinder head
  • KKK24K Turbo 1.0 bar boost
  • Solid engine mounts
  • URS6 rear cross member and anti-roll bar
  • New bushes all around
  • New suspension

The vendor has gone to town on the engine. It is an MC1 engine which has had the bores honed, new piston rings, shells, crank bolts and seals fitted. The cylinder head has been ported and polished before having new valve guides and the valve seats recut. There is a fast road camshaft with new hydraulic tappets. A Dialynx exhaust manifold has been fitted and connects to a 3” downpipe and 3” custom stainless steel exhaust. The original KKK26K turbo has been removed and a KKK24K unit fitted for a faster spool up. The boost has been increased to 1.0 bar, and the engine is sitting on solid engine mounts.

Needless to say, the engine runs like a dream and is reported to pull well through the Torsen five-speed gearbox with no issues. The suspension has had a URS6 rear crossmember and an anti-roll bar fitted. New suspension bushes are installed, the dampers have been upgraded to Koni at the rear, and coilovers on the front and lowered approximately 35mm. A URS6 modified front strut brace and a rebuilt steering rack improve the handling and feel further. The brakes have also been rebuilt and fitted with braided brake hoses; these are reported to bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no issues.

SUMMARY

A true underrated 80s gem, rarer than a coupé Quattro and just as much fun! The 5-cylinder 2.2 litre turbo offered plenty of performance in its day, and this one has been improved further with all the modifications listed above.
It’s undoubtedly a car that should be on your list of vehicles to own from the 80s, if only to experience the feeling of 80s boost, which is now running at 1.0 bar on this 1989 200 Quattro Turbo.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
