1989 Daimler Double Six

Highlights

  • Exceptional Bordeaux Red with cream leather interior
  • Superb condition throughout
  • Less than 54,000 miles from new

The Appeal

Make no mistake; this Daimler is undeniably on a different level to others offered elsewhere.  There would be very little effort required to take it to concours level.  The mileage is unusually low for its age, but looking at the car you could be forgiven for thinking it had covered even fewer.

It is obvious that the respray and restoration work carried out around 2008 was completed to an exceptional standard, and as the Daimler has lived a sheltered life since, it remains just as smart today.  If you are looking for the best around, here it is…

The Interior

  • Impressive cream leather with Burgundy piping
  • Clean and presentable condition
  • Excellent wood veneer throughout
The interior is exactly the quality you’d expect from a Daimler that has covered a mere 54,000 miles from new.  It is quite obvious that it has been extremely well looked after and never parked outside for any length of time as there is no fading or UV damage to any of the materials.  The leather is in excellent condition; we could only find a couple of small marks, and the driver’s seat has some creasing that would perhaps benefit from a leather treatment.

The carpets are all immaculate as is the roof lining.  The wood veneer is excellent with a good shine, and only the smallest of cracks visible either side of the Daimler badge on the centre console,- barely noticeable. The steering wheel is pretty much perfect, as is the whole dash area and instruments.  We checked all the switches and can report that everything appears to function correctly, including the sunroof and electric windows.  The door panels are all clean and free of scuff marks with working marker lights, and the sill plates are equally untouched, with just minor scratches to the driver’s side sill plate.

The boot is clean and very smart with biscuit coloured carpet throughout, complete with matching bag for the jack and brace.  There is an original and complete Jaguar tool kit, along with a set of thick burgundy coloured sheepskin floor mats.

The Exterior

  • Full respray circa 2008
  • Excellent wheels with new Pirelli tyres
  • Bright chrome parts with no pitting
According to paperwork on file the Daimler received a complete repaint in its original colour of Bordeaux Red Clear in about 2008, although there is no invoice on file.  We would think this had to be correct as the paint work is excellent with no sign of corrosion to be found anywhere.  The 4th owner bought the Daimler in 1995 and then took the car with him when moving to the Isle of Wight in 2002.

The respray was carried out by Lushington Hill Bodyshop of Wotton, IoW, and it was obviously so simple spray over.  Some remedial work was required to the body and the fuel tank, all glass and doors were removed during the process. Elsewhere on the exterior the chromework is excellent with no pitting.  The black plastic on the bumpers has aged well with no evidence of the colour fading that plagued cars of this period.

The wheels are in great condition with no damaged or corrosion and they have a set of barely used Pirelli P4000 tyres.

The Mechanics

  • In current ownership for XXX years
  • Stamped service history to 50,000 miles
  • MoT valid until April 2023
It’s no surprise that the Daimler performs as well as it looks.  We drove to and from the photoshoot and can report that it’s all systems go!  Starting first time, and driving with no strange noises from suspension or steering, the Daimler really is a pleasure to drive.  The gearbox does its job smoothly and the step-down works just where you want it to. The V12 is gloriously smooth, and gives you a firm shove in the back under acceleration, accompanied by a subdued roar.

The Service book and MoT history tells the story of this car, with regular servicing until just 4,000 miles ago. There are no invoices for more recent work as unfortunately the owner was suffering from Alzheimer’s and some of the paperwork was mislaid. Sadly, after 25 years of ownership the Daimler was sold to a friend on the Isle of Wight in 2018. He has added just less than 2,000 miles in the past 4 years, having the car regularly serviced by Wights Classic Garage.

Summary

There is something about a Daimler that will always be a cut above the more average Jaguar.  Better equipped in period and now much rarer, this example has to be one of the best around.  The condition has to be down the care and expense lavished upon it during its 25 years with an owner who obviously loved it.  What a beautiful example.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
