The Appeal
The world of four seater convertibles is a small one, so if you want an open top summer car with space for family and friends, your choices tend to be limited, or involve expensive European classics.
That’s why we like this 1989 Escort Mk4 Cabriolet. It’s a rare find these days, since most were driven into the ground, and must be one of the best around. Dressed up with a RS body kit, auxiliary lights and XR3 wheels that make it stand out, it is a really tidy low-mileage car that has clearly been cherished.
This era of Escort tends to be prone to rust, a trait that this car seems to have avoided. That is a view supported by the MOT, which runs to September with no advisories, structural or otherwise.
The interior is well kept too, featuring re-trimmed red leather interior to match the roof. It also sports a set of modified dials with lemon yellow backings. The MOT history supports the low displayed mileage, although it is not verified.
Economical, stylish and supported by excellent and relatively inexpensive parts supply, this Escort is something different in which to enjoy the sun’s rays.

✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
