1989 Honda CRX 1.6i 16v DOHC (2nd gen)

Highlights

  • 102,594 miles from new
  • Just 3 owners
  • Excellent service history
  • Recent ‘windows out’ respray
  • MOT to November 2023

The Appeal

With its revvy little powertrains, low weight and surprisingly spacious layout, the CRX is something of a hidden gem in Honda’s modern history. This handsome little car provides superb handling and sparkling performance, all wrapped up in a charming and well-proportioned coupé shape.
This particular example is a British car that benefits from the DOHC, 16-valve ‘D16A9’ engine. Having been treated to a comprehensive respray in its factory shade of Polar White just last year, it presents in excellent overall condition, with no modifications – which is highly unusual for these cars.

If you fancy putting a fun, increasingly rare and much-loved modern classic on your driveway, there’s not many better options than this.

The Interior

  • Period grey fabric front sports seats, with smart striped centre inserts and ‘CRX’ embossing to the back-rests
  • The front seats are in very good overall condition, with a some wear and a couple of small tears showing on the driver’s seat
  • The rear bench is trimmed in black vinyl and appears to be in excellent condition
  • Grey carpets and black floor mats present well, with no notable wear or damage
  • Electric windows, door mirrors and factory fitted metal sunroof
  • Original Blaupunkt radio/cassette player, with discrete Bluetooth upgrade which does not affect the aesthetic
  • All of the trim and switchgear looks to be in good order, with some light wear and blemishing commensurate with the car’s age
  • We noted a little sagging to the sun shields and the headlining of the sunroof
  • At the back, the boot space is in good order, with an undamaged parcel shelf, spacesaver spare wheel and jack
  • We’re assured by the vendor that everything works well, with no issues or faults reported

The Exterior

  • Handsome Polar White paintwork, which benefited from a ‘windows out’ respray in 2021
  • During the respray, the rear wings were also replaced and a new fibreglass/composite sunroof panel was sourced from Japan and fitted
  • Overall, the paint shows in very fine order, with no major marks or blemishes we could discern
  • The bodywork all looks nice and straight, with no corrosion or damage we could see, and even, consistent panel gaps
  • All of the glass and other external trim elements appear to be in excellent condition, with only very minor blemishes present
  • The factory 14-inch alloy wheels were refurbished in August 2021 and present very well, with a smart coat of silver paint and no kerb damage we could identify – they're shod with tyres that appear to have good tread levels
  • The underside looks clean and neat, with no obvious damage or corrosion to the sills, floor or fuel tank
  • We noted a little surface corrosion to some of the suspension components, as you may expect, but this looks to be very minor

The Mechanics

  • 1.6-litre (1,598cc) 16-valve, DOHC four-cylinder (D16A9 engine)
  • Five speed manual transmission
  • The engine bay looks neat and clean, with just a little surface corrosion to some components
  • We’re told that new OEM brakes have been recently fitted all round
  • The vendor also tells us that the cambelt and water pump have been replaced this year
  • No faults of mechanical issues are reported by the vendor, and they tell us that the car runs very well

Summary

This delightful little sports coupé is presented in very good order, with a recent respray and a superb history file detailing years of fastidious care. We think it’s an absolute cracker, and we’re sure its next owner will be over the moon with their purchase.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
