1989 Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible

Highlights

• Presented in metallic light blue with Navy blue leather interior
• A superb grand tourer, oozing character & sophistication
• Recent new mohair roof and cover

The Background

Jaguars’ replacement for its ‘60s sporty E Type, the XJS was designed to take on both Ferrari & Lamborghini in the Grand Tourer category. With its V12 engine, it was capable of 0-60 mph in under 8 seconds, with a top speed just short of 150mph, no mean feat in the early ‘70s.

The History

First registered on the 3rd of January 1989 by supplying dealers Stratstone of Central London, this XJS has only averaged 2015 miles a year over the last 33 years, but most of these were in the cars first four years.

The service book shows that servicing was carried out almost exclusively by Jaguar main dealers, with the car moving up to Norfolk around 1995 and into the care of Mann Eggerton in Norwich.

The last service stamp in the book is at 65,752 miles in June 2010.

After this, we understand it was dry stored by its owner for the next 10 years, being regularly exercised around his grounds before a sale ensued around the end of 2019.

Subsequently bought by the vendor in 2021 and used on very rare occasions last summer, it’s now up for sale as it just doesn’t fit with his current requirements….ie his wife doesn’t seem to like it unfortunately…

The Paperwork

Original handbooks in the dealer’s wallet, workshop manual, original XJS sales brochure and the Jaguar service record are all present.

The XJS has an Mot until August 2022.

The Interior

Typically Jaguar with a wooden veneered dash, black faced dials with the odd chrome trim tastily added to finish things off, all of which are in excellent condition.

Seats are finished in navy blue quality leather, and too are in great condition, with just a little scuffing on the drivers’ seat bolster. Sumptuous carpets smother the floor and appear in great condition, clean & no holes/ fraying with no signs at all of damp having crept in.

There are electrically heated & adjustable seats, electric windows & roof, cruise control and all complemented by the original radio. As you’ll see in the photos, the interior really is in excellent condition all the way through.

The Exterior

This car has obviously benefited from garage storage all its life. Paintwork would appear to be original and whilst not concourse standard, would please most owners as it is virtually spotless.

The odd very small stone chip & a little blistering around the XJS badge on the boot were all that we could spot in the blemish dept. Wheels were shod with matching Pirelli tyres and the rims were in fantastic condition, we don’t think this XJS has seen much winter driving over the years.

The roof is a recent new addition and by the looks of is, so too is the roof cover for when the roof is folded away. Both are in Navy mohair as original, and fit is spot on.

So overall, a great looking XJS Convertible which isn’t in need of any exterior work for the foreseeable future.

The Mechanics

When we moved the Jag around for photos, it started instantly with the engine remaining very quiet as one would expect from a V12 engine of this providence.
It shifted into drive and reverse for manoeuvring with ease and is said by the vendor to be extremely pleasant to drive, especially with the electric roof down letting the sunshine in.

All switches & electrics are said to be operational as expected.

The Appeal

These beautiful grand tourers from Jaguar are rarely found in such an excellent condition and this Jag has certainly been pampered by its keepers throughout its life.

Effortless cruising ability, smooth ride, topless & of course that sumptuous interior, what more could a gentleman want from this fast-appreciating classic. It even has a large boot for those golf clubs or touring luggage.

Tour of the Alp passes this summer anyone?

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
