1989 Mercedes Benz 560SEL (W126)

Highlights

  • Service history
  • Current owner for last 7 years
  • Low mileage

The Appeal

The Mercedes 560 SEL was a very well equipped executive express with all the bells and whistles with extra legroom in the back, where you’ll find electrically adjustable seats and an originally fitted car phone.

Always brimming with the latest available technology the Mercedes features Hydro-Pneumatic suspension and other electronic driving aids such as ABS and ASR (Anti-Skid Recovery)

A 5.6 litre V8 engine up front provides more than enough power and torque, which is all managed very smoothly by the very capable Mercedes automatic gearbox.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1989 where it was used as a luxury private hire car
  • Full MB service history up to 40,000 miles
  • Second owner  had the car in Portugal with him for three years where it was regularly serviced by Cadimar main dealer until 56,000
  • Serviced and minimally maintained from 2002 till 2015 by local garage.
  • Purchased by the current owner in 2015
  • All fluids changed and new right hand manifold downpipe fitted in 2015
  • New Pirelli P6 fitted in 2016
  • No current MOT, last MOT expired in 2016
  • Stored in dry barn since 2016
  • V5c present
  • 2 sets of keys
  • Original owner’s manuals and service book
  • Full tool-kit, except for the towing eye
In the last 7 years the car has done very little mileage and has been maintained as and when required to keep it running, with the mechanics being looked after by a local independent garage.

The Interior

  • Good condition grey leather interior
  • Electric windows and electric steel sunroof
  • Cruise control and air conditioning
  • Heated memory orthopaedic front seats
  • Rear electric seats
The 560SEL has a well-equipped interior that you would expect from a top of the line Mercedes. There’s cruise control, Air conditioning (which may need a re-gassing), heated electric memory seats and a good-sized steel sunroof.

The leather seats are still in really nice condition, and the rest of the interior looks very smart indeed with only a crack in the top of the dashboard and some small cracks in the top of the rear offside door card letting the overall impression down a little.

Headlining and carpets are all good and the wood inlays are without cracks or missing veneer.

It has town and country horns, which is nice, and it is reported that the original radio and electric aerial currently do not work, and although the motor works for the rear blind, the blind does not lift or retract.

The Exterior

  • Blue Black Metallic paintwork
  • Steel sunroof
  • Recently refurbished wheels with good tyres
The Blue Black Metallic paintwork still looks pretty good from a distance but as you get closer there are a few areas that could do with some smartening up. There’s a small dent in the bonnet and on the rear bootlid, there are the usual stone chips up front and the lacquer on the roof is beginning to break down in a couple of spots. The rear bumper is probably past saving as it is peeling quite badly.

A replaced, and poorly resprayed front nearside wing, is quite noticeable but the original wheels have recently been fully refurbished and all have good tyres and overall the car presents itself nicely. The headlight wipers are missing but these are supplied separately.

The Mechanics

  • Good initial MB service history
  • Dry stored for the past 7 years
  • Needs some TLC
Mercedes used a Hydro-pneumatic suspension system which is excellent at providing a fantastically comfortable ride, but as it ages the huge number of seals in the system can break down causing air to leak from the system. Such is the case with this car, as it will lose pressure after a few days, but if regularly driven the system replenished the air and works well.

Currently the ASR (Anti-skid recovery) light comes on around 2 minutes after starting the car. The pump in the left wing has been checked and works so the ABS sensors may turn out to be the reason the system is showing a warning light.

The car is also in need of a new exhaust system and most of a replacement system is supplied along with the car but the exhaust manifold and front section will need to be procured.

The car runs and starts well but does require some work in the areas mentioned above.

The Summary

The 560SEL is a lot of car, powerful, comfortable and certainly a well-regarded modern day classic that needs to be driven and enjoyed, which is why it’s now up for auction.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
