The Appeal
When thoughts turned to a compact saloon to compete with BMW’s 3 Series, Mercedes could have relied on its brand image and churned out something half-baked. It didn’t. £600m was invested, including a brand new factory, and there was a firm, and not wholly surprising emphasis on over-engineering.
That all makes this 1989 190E a car to relish. It’s one of the desirable 2L fuel injected cars with 120bhp mated to a manual box. Painted handsome ‘blue black’ with a contrasting beige fabric checked interior, it is a fantastically preserved and highly original car. It has only covered 36,311 miles from new, which is supported by MOT history and servicing records. It’s been in the same family from new - passing to the current keeper in 2024.
The service history runs continuously until a couple of years before the car was evidently put into storage. It was recommissioned in 2025 by specialist Deutschteck. This work included a full check over and service. The car was fitted with four new tyres, a battery and the exhaust and original Blaupunkt radio were repaired. The March 2025 MOT contained no advisories and the car will be sold with a fresh 12 months MOT.
The vendor says:
“The car is in beautiful condition and run exceptionally well. It is a vehicle which, for it's time is very well appointed with an electric sunroof, electric nearside mirror adjustment and Blaupunkt radio/cassette with electric arial. It attracts lots of admirers and is a real nostalgic way of driving!”
