  • Meticulously maintained and exceedingly well preserved
  • Desirable 1.9-litre engine specification
  • Newly serviced and MOT’d

The Appeal

Weighing in at a mere 860 kilograms, the 1.9-litre 130 horsepower engine provided ample performance and propelled the Peugeot 205 GTI to stardom.
This 1989 example has been meticulously maintained from day one, the vendor reporting that it has been stored indoors for a number of years. Few cars offer the thrills of an ‘80s hot hatch and this Phase 1.5 205 is amongst the smartest examples you’ll find.

The History and Paperwork

  • Registered on 29th September 1989
  • Same owner from 1994 to 2017
  • Only 5,000 miles covered during the last 15 years
  • MOT until July 2023
  • Comprehensive service in 2017, replacing numerous components
  • Accompanied by history file containing previous MOT certificates and invoices
  • Original owner’s manuals and sales brochures

The Interior

  • Grey and red cloth seats with leather bolsters
  • Plastics in excellent condition
  • Smart red carpeting
  • Sunroof
  • Electric windows
Despite being quite pared back in many ways, this 205 GTI was equipped with the modern conveniences of a sunroof and electric windows which all function as they should. The interior plastics making up the dashboard and switchgear are in very fine condition, the vendor adding that the car’s many years stored inside have prevented the effects of UV light.
The red carpeting too, seems to have benefitted from indoor storage, as there is little evidence of any fading or excessive wear. The aforementioned cloth and leather seats are in particularly fine condition, displaying very little in the way of wear and no damage we could see. The vendor adds there is only very slight wear visible on the gear lever and steering wheel.
Lifting the hatchback boot lid that defines this genre of vehicle, the black carpet appears to be in good order and lifting it reveals a very sound boot floor underneath.

The Exterior

  • Graphite Grey
  • No evidence of corrosion
  • Plastic trim in very fine order
Having been stored inside, this Peugeot has escaped the corrosion affecting so many of its counterparts. The door shuts, sills and rear aches (all known areas for concern on 205s) appear spotless with no evidence of corrosion or paint bubbling at all. The Graphite Grey paintwork is in wonderful shape with only a few surface scratches and light patina as commensurate with age and use.

Furthermore, the vendor informs us that the plastic trims which run around the car’s waist are in fine order. It’s wearing factory-correct alloy wheels, which are newly refurbished, and the tyres have a good quantity of tread remaining.

The Mechanics

  • Disc brakes front and rear
  • 130 bhp
  • 1.9-litre inline-four
  • Impressive throttle response
  • Numerous components serviced and replaced
With GTI’s sold in 1.6-litre and 1.9-litre variants, this is the most powerful version of the 205 and the vendor reports that its performance is very impressive. As you would expect from such a smart example, the owner reports that this 205 drives really well, with nimble steering, powerful brakes and the instant throttle response they were renowned for at the time.
The Peugeot is sold newly serviced and MOT’d until 7th July 2023. Notably, the car has passed its last four MOTs with no advisories. The vendor informs us that the clutch, rear suspension, (rose jointed) gear linkages and starter motor have all been recently replaced. In a 2017 engine overhaul, the timing belt and water pump were replaced. The vendor informs us that this equates to around 3,500 miles ago.

Summary

Without doubt one of the greatest hot hatchbacks of all time, Peugeot’s 205 GTI combined a fizzy engine with a small, lightweight body shell and front-wheel drive propulsion.
This desirable 1.9-litre example from 1989 is in lovely condition, both mechanically and cosmetically, making it a true collector’s item that is ready to be enjoyed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
