1989 Porsche 928 S4

  • Excellent condition throughout
  • Only three owners from new
  • Long MOT and ready to drive

The Background

Porsche introduced the 928 in 1997 intending it to be a replacement to the 911, yet whilst that never happened the 928 found it’s own special place in the prestigious car makers lineup.

Winning car of the year in 1978 in part thanks to its revolutionary design that was highly futuristic at the time, the 928 garnered much praise from launch and only got better with time. Porsche revised the 928 several times over the fourteen years that it was in production.

This version, the S4, featured several improvements over previous iterations including the new 5.0L v8 that featured twin cam heads providing a significant boost to power all the way up to 316bhp and adding a ton of low end torque. There were also a range of aesthetic changes to bring the car into the 90’s, all of this has made the S4 a much sought after car that has grown a solid reputation as a fantastic tourer.

The History

The original owner purchased the car in London in 1989 (it still has the original dealers sticker in the rear window) and owned the car through to 2018, it was then purchased by a collector from North Wales at auction to add to his extensive collection where it remained until the current owner acquired the car, in 2019, after a long search for the right 928.

This is their second 928 and was purchased shortly after selling the first and immediately missing it, now they have made the hard decision to sell it to help fund their return to flying.

The Paperwork

There is extensive paperwork covering the life of the car including all of the work completed by the current owner as detailed below alongside all of the invoices from the previous two owners including a full engine rebuild in 1999.

The Interior

The interior is generally in good condition throughout, with only small signs of wear visible in the usual places such as the seat bolsters. The seats are all finished in plush leather that makes for an exquisitely comfortable driving experience and feature full electric adjustments, a rarity for a car of this period.

The dashboard, carpets and headlining are all in good condition and the car retains all of the original features including both the cargo net in the boot and the original Porsche toolkit. There is a small amount of damage to the top of the rear passenger side headrest as pictured.
Whilst leg-room in the rear isn’t exactly generous the rear seats are deep buckets finished in the same luxuriantly thick leather. They also fold flat, extending the cargo capacity of the 928 significantly and further increasing it’s appeal as a tourer.

The Exterior

The exterior is in mostly very good condition with the occasional area that could benefit from some attention. Finished in an elegant Polar Silver and with a long flowing shape this 928 looks fantastic and would be the envy of any car enthusiast. The wheels have been fully refurbished and most of the paint is in good condition, with a couple of chips as shown in the photographs.
Long, low and with curving lines the 928 has an instantly recognizable shape, finished in metallic silver this is a fantastic looking car with performance to match.

The Mechanics

As a true porsche enthusiast (and local Porsche club organiser) this car has been meticulously maintained and they have completed extensive improvements including; replaced MAF, LH control unit, knock sensors, rubber seals around the windows, fuel filler gator, bonnet and boot struts, cam sensors, serviced at recommended intervals including cambelt and waterpump, overhauled AC compressor and lots of other sundry items.
Everything works exactly as it should on this car (and it has an extraordinary amount of features for a car of this generation). The tailgate release works as it should and the courtesy lights come on when the drivers side door is opened. Everything else from the power seats through to the air conditioning and sunroof all work perfectly.

The Appeal

We’d argue that the 928 offers unparalleled driving experience for the money. With a surprisingly roomy four seater interior the 928 makes for a fantastic tourer and this S4 benefits from all of the improvements that Porsche made during production. With a big 5.0L V8 this 928 is no slouch with a sub six second 0-60 and it keeps pulling all the way up to the top speed of 168mph.

But don’t be fooled by the raw power, the 928 S4 holds the road in a vice like grip, its handling is remarkable for a front engined car of this generation and combined with the fantastic engine it makes for an exceptional driving experience.
This is one of the finest examples of a 928 we have seen, with only three owners from new, low mileage for the age and a fantastic service history that is reflected in the condition of the car, this is one you don’t want to miss.  The 928 has developed a solid reputation for providing a fantastic driving experience, maybe it’s time you found out what all of the fuss is about.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
