1989 Porsche 944 S2

  • Benefits from copious expenditure on mechanical work and servicing during the last three years
  • Very presentable and in smart, usable condition
  • Advisory-free MOT valid until June 2024
  • ‘944’ private registration included

The Appeal

After many years of success with their air-cooled, rear-engined 911, Porsche diversified their range with a series of water-cooled, front-engined cars and the 944 became their strongest seller until the Boxster came along in 1996. Revered for combining high performance with refinement, the 944 became a poster car of the 1980s and remains popular amongst enthusiasts today.

Here we have an immensely usable and well sorted S2 dating from 1989. Besides a major service and two small services to follow up, it benefits from in excess of £4,000 spent on other work during the last three years which has made it a reliable and strong performer, ideal for those who like to make good use of their classic cars. It’s also really presentable and while a few small areas could use some cosmetic improvement, this remains a handsome example which could certainly be enjoyed exactly as it is. With an MOT free of advisories and valid until June 2024, this 944 can be driven away and enjoyed.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor in 2021

  • Original service book which details service history from new by a variety of Porsche specialists, generalists and owners
  • The vendor has amassed a comprehensive record of work since they acquired the car
  • Major service carried out in March 2021 - invoice supplied
  • Two subsequent minor services have also been carried out
  • Over £4,000 spent on other professional work in order to bring this car up to a high mechanical standard

  • Electrically adjustable front seat and central locking also in good order
  • New radio head-unit, with usb input and aux-in fitted
  • Electrically adjustable mirrors
  • The driver’s side electric window can apparently stick a little but still works
  • The headlining is sagging slightly at the rear
  • The original digital clock is no longer legible which is not uncommon of 944s of this vintage
  • The vendor points out that the fixings for the boot-lining, rear luggage cover spring and passenger door trim all require attention
  • Smart carpets with minimal wear
  • All the controls and switchgear present really well
  • No excessive UV damage to the dashboard or plastics

The Exterior

  • Linen Grey paintwork - which may have been changed early in the car’s life (c1993) from another grey
  • Straight bodywork with no notable dents or scratches besides the usual blemishes you’d expect to see on a car of this age
  • The vendor identifies some small patches of corrosion to both front wheel arches and some sight bubbling to the roof and nearside door
  • The trims around the offside window would benefit from some attention
  • All the badging remains in fine condition
  • Smart OEM alloy wheels with a few age-related marks
  • The black plastics all present well

The Mechanics

  • 3.0-litre DOHC 16v four-cylinder engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • The 2021 major service included replacing the camshaft and balance shaft belts
  • New shock absorbers fitted front and rear (June 2022) as well as a great many other consumable parts during present ownership
  • Said to be running and driving very well indeed with no faults to report
  • The vendor praises its ‘analogue’ driving experience

A 944 S2 with a burgundy interior is a welcome ‘80s throwback and we’re sure you’ll agree that this well sorted example is a most tempting prospect. For those seeking a usable classic with healthy mechanicals, this is the car for you.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
