The Background

If the embodiment of motoring elegance is a Rolls-Royce, then a Rolls-Royce with its cabin open to the stars must be nothing short of exquisite. That was certainly the goal when Rolls-Royce set about engineering the Corniche convertible, and looking at this stunning black with red trim example, it's safe to say they nailed the brief. The first Corniche convertible was launched in 1971, and it was met keenly by buyers. Over the years, it would evolve and change before becoming the car we have here, the Corniche II.

This new version gained some mild visual tweaks - new arches, new wheel covers, new arch design and body coloured bumpers - but was largely the same as before from an aesthetic standpoint. Why change what people already love? It did, however, gain some technical changes. A new instrument cluster, ABS from 1988 and a new steering wheel. Power, however, came from the same trusted 6.75-litre V8 as before.

The History

The car was bought by the current owner in February of this year. We're told that prior to this, the car was stored inside, and has been kept away from elements in general over the course of its life, hence the impressive condition. Another factor that has been pivotal in this car's impressive current condition is the fact in lived in Italy for a time. It is one of around 48 still roadworthy in the UK, so represents a rare opportunity for those of you bidding. The current owner, who is selling it was a heavy heart, is confident that if you're looking for a Corniche of any sort, there can be few left as good as this.

The Paperwork

There are four keys included, which is pleasing. The V5 is present (it should be noted that the vendor is not the registered keeper. However, the registration in the pictures provided (G20 AAA) is included in sale.) along with plenty of documentation and an extensive history including its time abroad. There are the original Rolls-Royce book packs, in which we find the service book that has been stamped and signed accordingly. There are past invoices that serve to show how well the car has been looked after, with several detail repairs made at the behest of the owner noticing something was awry. New wheel bearings, a new amplifier, various services and the like. It's evident this car has wanted for nothing.

The Interior

The pictures of this interior say everything, it is a very, very nice place to be with the classic burled walnut wood trims and red leather. The leather is rich, deep and supremely comfortable. There are no immediately obvious defects, nor any significant wear. Even the piping is in good order. The same can be said of the door cards, the dash top and even the centre console/arm rest (which houses a delightfully period mobile phone). Make no mistake, this interior is unapologetically bold, but in being so, it is so much more appealing than the traditional cream or black.

Everything works according to the vendor, with the chrome and black switch gear in great condition and none of the common sun-damage to the door capping. The rich walnut across the dash and doors is in wonderful condition, while all the gauges are bright, clear and function as you would anticipate. The leather-trimmed steering wheel falls to hand pleasantly, as do the stalks and drive selector. Furthermore, the stereo is hooked up to a ten-disc CD changer, so you can cruise along with your favourite tunes in your ear!

The Exterior

The exterior is a lovely gloss black with all the chrome you would expect on a Rolls Royce with lovely red pinstripe detailing on the body and wheels, which are shod with four new Avon Turbosteel tyres. The timeless look of the Corniche body never get old, and the twin headlight and classic Rolls-Royce grill topped with the Spirit of Ecstasy emblem serve to make you feel special every time you cast your gaze over the car. We're told by the owner that passenger door has been repainted, but as you can see from the pictures, this has been done to a high standard. As such, the body of the car is straight and true, with good panel gaps throughout.

The lower sections of the Corniche look good and solid, though there a small amount of bubbling coming through on one lower wing corner, which we have photographed. The sills look solid, and the underside seems to have been well protected against the elements.

The convertible top works very well and all the windows and dropping pillars work as they should; a fantastic drop-top experience. Being a gloss black car any fine marks show up and as such the paint is not in showroom condition with some fine marks and swirls etc, but with a quality machine polish and ceramic coat this paint would life from great to exceptional.

The Mechanics

Mechanically sound, no expense has been spared on this cars maintenance. The 6.75L V8 purrs, reving cleanly and clearly with no spluttering, nor any untoward noises or grumbles. It holds temperature without issue, and the seller assures us that out on the open road, this car is every bit the 'magic carpet' one would anticipate. The hydraulic suspension is in full working order, with no leaks, nor any evidence of past leaks.

Under the bonnet is obviously well maintained and it presents well, with the big RR-badged air intake grabbing the eye right away. This car has been well loved, it's clear. The lines, the fittings and all the hoses look healthy with no perishing. A quick detail, and this engine bay could be one to wow the crowds at shows, if that's your thing. If not, it's simply a pleasant, well-cared for engine room.  Much the same can be said for the underside, the steel work does show some light surface rust but overall has been well maintained and cared for. Again, we would encourage you study the images in detail. Included is the Rolls Royce tool kit as well which is a nice touch, as this has often gone walkabout by this point in a car's life.

The Appeal

This 1989 Rolls-Royce Corniche II is more than a car, it's a rolling work of art. Whoever ordered this back in '89 wasn't afraid of living a little. The bold, unapologetically vibrant red interior is testament to that. But what a wonderful choice to make. It makes simply getting into this car something of an event. To drive it, as it effortlessly glides down the rod, with the roof down... that's more than an event. It's sensory overload. This car is a special example of one of Rolls-Royce's biggest hits. It's style, but it's also substance thanks to impressive build quality and a sumptuous powertrain that is ready to drive you to Nottingham, or Nice. Your choice. It's been cared for, it's in excellent mechanical health, it's in utterly outstanding condition and because of all that, this is the one for you. You won't find another like this, so don't miss out.
