Fast Fords are always good news on the classic car market, and those from the Eighties and Nineties are very much at the forefront when it comes to desirability these days.
The XR3i was the Escort at its aspirational best. Ford’s answer to the yuppie darling that was the VW Golf GTi Mk2, the Escort was equally appealing for upwardly mobile owners who wanted a car that elevated them above GL and Ghia ownership, yet still had an accessible price tag.
This one is one of the last, registered in 1990 just ahead of the Escort Mk 5’s debut and therefore as well-equipped as the XR3i ever got, including such goodies as RS alloys, electric windows and an all-singing, all-dancing LCD trip computer.
It’s a great example, restored by the previous owner in 2015 to 2016 and sold shortly afterwards to the current owner, a private car collector in the Midlands, who has kept it in secure indoor storage ever since. It has barely been driven in his ownership other than occasional local journeys, but has been maintained by his own mechanics and kept in running order.LZZsMJsbCBkMi2ehzZO6FJ2mUwjAVpeTfAftEn1N.jpeg1.59 MB
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
Fully restored in 2016
UK V5C
Original eBay listing from when car was sold in 2016, detailing work carried out
This is a great opportunity to own a car that’s the perfect flashback to the yuppie era – a restored XR3i put back to largely original condition. It’s fresh from storage but pretty much as it was when put away straight after its restoration – ideal to enjoy as is or detail to the next level if you want a concours example.
