The Appeal
Introduced in 1984 Harley Davidson's Springer Softail was powered by the new all-alloy Evolution engine with a diaphragm clutch and toothed-belt final drive. The Softail featured a cleverly disguised rear end that looks like that of a pre-war 'rigid'-framed Harley but is in fact sprung, as its name suggests, with two dampers mounted beneath the frame.
Completing the 'vintage' retro look was a girder-type Springer front fork with springs either side, centre shock absorber and a 21 inch front wheel. Much admired for the comfort of their ride, and with numerous aftermarket accessories available most Springer Softails have been customised to some extent and this one is no exception.
Due to a change in lifestyle the owner told us the bike has always been kept in a dry unit with very little use over the past few years. Therefore a new home is now required.
This rarely seen desirable Harley Davidson wants just a little time invested with attention to detail cosmetically to enjoy and be proud of a real head-turner that runs and rides beautifully.

- Comfortable pull back Riser Drag Bars
When you first see the Harley your eye is immediately drawn to the hand painted Native American themed custom artwork on the fuel tank. Completed in 1994 and signed “Nobby” the owner isn’t sure who Nobby is but the artwork, in shades of blue on black, is well executed. Closer inspection reveals that there is also an image on the rear mudguard and a Harley Davidson logo on the front mudguard too. This can be quite deceiving and in certain light for example on an overcast day it is hardly noticeable therefore the tank and fenders can appear to be just Black Basecoat Metallic.
The Harley was already verging on a custom bike when new with plenty of chrome parts included. This example has had a few more custom parts added, mostly by the previous owner including chrome push rod covers, Hypercharger air intake, crash bars and Sissy bar with rear luggage rack.
However, it should be noted that in some places the chrome as become pitted, and there is the odd place where the chrome has flaked off. Also some of the exposed metal parts have become a bit tarnished with slight surface rust in places.
The black vinyl seat is in good condition with no holes or scuffs. Tyres are fat whitewall at the rear and a thinner whitewall on the front, both are only lightly worn.
The Mechanics
- 1,340cc EVO engine
- Screamin’ Eagle II exhausts
- Front and rear Billet brakes
The Harley started easily on the day of our visit despite having not been run for a couple of weeks. This is not a bike for the shy as the builders across the road immediately looked up as the Harley drowned the noise from their own machinery! The Screamin’ Eagle exhausts are a later addition and compliment the custom chrome look, but they are loud! The Evo motor packs 82 “cubes” (or 1,340cc in English!) and puts out 63hp which is more than adequate, and stopping is enhanced by large Billet drilled disc brakes front and rear with smart braided hoses.
Looking through the paperwork provides reassurance that although it hasn’t been ridden much recently (just 304 miles since 2013) it has had regular maintenance and an oil and filter change was carried out in April this year before it passed its MoT in May. Looking closely at the underside we didn’t spot any drips or leaks.
The seller tells us that it handles well and is remarkably stable making it particularly comfortable over longer distances.
Summary
The FXSTS series of Harleys are widely regarded as the nicest to ride and amongst the best looking of the Softail series. With a comfortable riding position and stable and predictable handling they are a favourite amongst those who know their Harleys. With its custom artwork and attractive and practical upgrades this example deserves to be ridden.
