The Appeal
If proof were needed that Mercedes’ diesel-powered W124 can virtually withstand Armageddon, here it is. In its 36 years, this 300D has covered the equivalent of 11 trips around the world yet it carries Controle Technique to July 2028, and it remains perfectly usable.
Its durability comes from Mercedes’ legendary OM603 engine. This car was factory-fitted with the 3L version of this 6cyl engine, but at 220,000 km received the larger, more powerful 3.5L version from the S-Class. Throughout its life it is said to have had just two keepers and always been garaged. We are told that it has recently been fitted with new Michelin tyres.
As you can see in the photos, there are signs of all this use, particularly outside. But for the buyer who wants a daily driver and values a car that wears its history proudly, that surely adds to the appeal. You could improve it, but maybe that’s not the point with this indestructible old stager.
