The Appeal
The W201 Mercedes was a massive gamble. It was the firm’s first foray into proper ‘mass market’ motoring. It could have gone badly wrong, and initially, thanks to the massive over-engineering and £600m development costs, it appeared to be heading that way. But buyers loved it, flocking to the ‘baby Mercedes’ with its high-quality fittings, such that sales hit 1.8M units over 10 years and paved the way for the firm’s current hegemony.
Despite all that, good, unmolested examples are surprisingly hard to find these days. Especially in this car's specification, which is fitted with the ultra-economical 75bhp 2L OM601 4-cyl diesel engine. With 157,143 km shown, it is barely run-in for an engine easily capable of 1M kilometres. It is a highly original and well-preserved car, painted in attractive Anthracite grey metallic with complementary grey checkered fabric interior.
The car is said to still wear its original paintwork, while inside, the fittings and finish appear to be from a much younger car. We’re told that it has been regularly serviced by Mercedes main dealers and specialists. It carries the reassurance of Controle Technique valid to April 2027. It would work well as a daily driver or suit a marque collector.
The vendor says:
“I don't think you can find another one in such good condition.”
