THE APPEAL

Is the itch to get back behind the wheel of a 90s hot hatch needing a scratch?

If so, this could be your solution to stop that said itch and step inside this wonderful 1990 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9. There are a few points which make this car stand out from the rest.

Firstly, it was imported from Japan in 2008, where there were approximately 250 automatic models (which this is) sent over, making this 205 somewhat of a rare vehicle.

The next thing to mention, which is a bonus, is that the car is in totally original condition with no restoration, including the interior.

The increasing values in the 205 GTIs of late has lead to these cars potentially being one of those unattainable classics to the majority in the very near future. One in this condition is not to be missed.

It's worth noting that a really low milage one sold in April at auction for £69,000 pounds which is a real indication of how they are appreciating, With age not having been kind to many examples of the 205 GTI and restorations costing £15000 and up, a rust free, original condition, reasonably priced car will become an extremely rare site very soon.

The condition we would say is in keeping with the low mileage of just 91,477 kilometres or 56,841 miles.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

 • Registration certificate is present
 • Registered in Ireland 2008
 • Previous NCT Certificates
 • NCT certificate valid until 31st January 2023

 • Please note that the buyer of this vehicle will be responsible for shipping and import duties if the buyer is outside of Ireland

The seller has owned this 90s icon for two years, and it was purchased, as many of us do, for a trip down memory lane; remembering what they were like in the 90s.

It was too good an opportunity to miss and get back behind the wheel of one of the best hot hatches around, the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9.

As mentioned, the car made its way from Japan in 2008, and since then, it has been kept in dry storage; as we all know, cars coming from Japan have seen no road salt, so corrosion is at a minimum, which is the case for this 205 GTI.

THE INTERIOR

 • Original interior
 • Well presented
 • Uprated sound system
The inside of the GTI is in original condition.

There is no excessive wear on the usual wear points, such as the bolsters of the front seats, and the material looks to be in good order with no issues to point out.

The door cards are also in very good condition with no apparent scuffs, and the electric window switches mounted in the door pocket show little signs of any wear and are reported to be working as they should.

The rear seat is also in good condition and looks to have had little use over the years, retaining the excellent condition.

Unfortunately, there is a crack in the driver’s side rear quarter panel, but it shouldn't be much of a job to replace if you wish.
The GTI steering wheel is in good order, and just behind, the instruments are working as they should, with the odometer showing the reading of 91,477 kilometres.

The 205 has received an upgrade in the in-car entertainment department with a Sony Head unit, some shelf mounted 6x9 Focal speakers and a Focal amplifier mounted under the driver's seat.

The switchgear and heater controls are in good condition with no wear to the buttons and again reported to work as they should.
The carpets are bright red and usually suffer from some UV fading. These look to be free from fading, which is another testament to how the car has been stored. The headlining is clean and tidy, with no sagging to mention.

THE EXTERIOR

 • Original paintwork
 • Excellent tyres
 • Well presented
 • Excellent underside
Finished in Gloss Black, the 205 presents really well and is reportedly wearing the original coat of paint.

Starting at the front, there are, as you would expect, some minor stone chips, but these are quite minimal. Both the headlights and lower fog lights are free from any chips or cracks, and the grille is in good order and looks to align as it should with the bonnet.
Moving around to the sides, the doors align straight with the quarter panel and wing. The side mouldings are in good condition with no scuffs that we can see on the plastics, and the red insert also looks to be in good order.

The glass shows no signs of any excessive scratches, the rubbers are in good order, and the pop out quarter windows operate as they should.
At the rear, the bumper, like the front, is free from any scuffs, and the correct badges are in place both on the rear panel and the quarters. The wheels are the originals and have never been refurbished.

There is some corrosion to them and some kerb rash, which would benefit from a refurbishment.

All four tyres are in excellent condition with a good amount of tread remaining.

THE MECHANICS

 • 1.9 litre
 • Automatic gearbox
 • Lowered suspension
 • Excellent exhaust note through a full 3” stainless steel unit
This pocket rocket is the more powerful and sought after 1.9-litre engine.

The car is reportedly well maintained, certainly from when it came into Ireland in 2008. It starts up as it should and is reported to have no untoward noises coming from the engine bay.

The gearbox is the rare automatic version which the seller says is a smooth change, and the GTI pulls well through the gears.
The underside of the car looks to be in excellent condition, with no signs of any corrosion to the suspension components or floor area, and it is reported that there is not even any surface corrosion on the subframe or torsion bar.

As you can see, the 205 sits a little lower than standard thanks to a set of lowering springs which improve the looks and give some additional handling benefits.

The car is reported to come to a halt as it should in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal.

Something to consider is that the conversion to make these cars manual is very easily and cheaply done. A number of automatic examples have been previously converted taking away from the originality, making this car much more rare, with the vendor's last check showing only showed two in the UK.

For those that are looking for an automatic and desire the nostalgic trip down memory lane or fulfilling the long time desire to own one with the endless smile enhancing sounds and enjoyment of driving a 205 GTI 1.9, this is now possible with one of the finest examples available on the market today.

Equally if you desire the appeal of a manual, the conversion can be done with minimal effort and cost. The parts are readily available second hand with the linkages clips and connections still available new from Peugeot.

SUMMARY

One of the finest French pocket rockets you will find.

With just 56,841 miles from new, the car has spent the first part of its life in Japan, where there is no salt, keeping corrosion to a minimum.

Moving to Ireland in 2008, it has had relatively little but regular use and, importantly, has always been held in dry storage, retaining the originality of this 90s hot hatch.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
