The Appeal
In the '80s when they weren’t building hot versions, car makers ere taking the roofs off their humble hatchbacks. Arguably, the best of these was the Golf Cabriolet, largely because it was developed by Karmann, who had done such a good job on the earlier Beetle.
This may explain why the Mk1 Cabriolet stayed in production for 10 years after the tin top version was superseded by the Mk2. There were many variants, all with enhanced specifications, of which the Clipper was amongst the most popular. These cars got GTI-adjacent styling such as body kits and alloy wheels.
Here we have a really nice 1990 Clipper that has covered few miles for its years. It is pleasingly factory standard and fitted with the 90bhp 1.8L petrol engine shared with the GTI, but here on carburettors. A vast history file attests to the care of its quartet of keepers, the current one since 2016. It will be sold with a new 12 months MOT prior to sale.
For those looking for a reliable, practical four-seat convertible with a healthy dash of classic style, this well-preserved car fits the bill.
