The Appeal
The Alfa 33 updated the brilliant running gear of the Alfasud and clothed it in a sharper, more modern body. Adding more power from the enlarged flat four ‘Boxer’ engines created torque steer, which led to the launch in 1983 of Alfa Romeo’s own four wheel drive system using a Ferguson viscous coupling.
The new system returned the surefooted handling for which the Alfasud was renowned. The Permanent 4 leaned into the car’s sporting potential, offering buyers an Italian-themed alternative to the Delta Integrale. With 137bhp from its fuel injected 1.7L 16V Boxer engine, this was the most powerful 33 available.
Despite its multifold appeal, the Permanent 4 sold in small numbers because it was expensive. Survivors are few and far between and certainly unlikely to be as good as this 1991 example. It remained with its original keeper until 2025 and has covered a paltry 21,000 kms.
Finished in classic Alfa Rosso and in, frankly, superb condition inside and out, this highly original car is a collector-quality example. The vendor recommissioned it in 2025 after a period in storage, including full service, new timing belt, replacement exhaust, rubber suspension fittings and new driveshaft mounting. It is said to have led an accident-free life.
Permanent 4s are a rare arrival on the market. The vendor says this car is the best in the world. Check the photos and you’ll see what he means.
