The Appeal
“Il Mostro” – The Monster – an evocative name for an equally legendary car.
That was the nickname bestowed on the Alfa Romeo SZ by fans of the marque when it debuted in 1989, designed by and built by Italian styling house Zagato, using the mechanical parts of the flagship 75 3.0 Cloverleaf and offering an exclusive GT driving experience.
Then SZ wasn’t the hardcore supercar its looks suggested, but it was still a fast and good-handling two-door coupé – and as for those looks? Well, wow!
A total of just over 1000 were made, so it’s no surprise to see it’s now a highly sought-after collectors’ item. And you’ll struggle to find one nicer than this.
Supplied new in Japan in 1991, it was imported to the UK in 2015 and has always been owned by private collectors, covering just over 18,000km (12,000 miles) from new. In the past couple of years, it has had thousands spent – a full mechanical overhaul and over £20,000 bringing the already solid and smart bodywork up to a standard where it’s a potential show-winner. It really is that good.
If you want one of the best SZs in the world, here it is.

Inside, it’s just as good. The Zagato Design tan leather seats and matching door cards and headlining are perfect, the carpets excellent and aside from some wear to the luggage straps behind the seats we couldn’t find anything to fault it at all – it’s a lovely example of a truly beguiling car, immaculately presented inside and out.
The Mechanics
3.0-litre V6
Manual transmission
Timing belt replaced less than 1,000km ago
Recent service
All brake pads and discs, drive shaft doughnuts and suspension bushes overhauled within last 1,000km
Full stainless exhaust system
Timing belt replaced twice within the last 1000km
The SZ has been well maintained during its time in the UK and has seen all of the key mechanical components including the all-important cambelt replaced in the last 1,000km – a few years ago now, but the car has been kept in climate-controlled storage and little used since as it has been in a private collection.
It starts on the button and sounds fantastic, with the owner reporting that it drives without fault.
All SZs are special by their very nature – but this one is a very special car indeed and has to be one of the finest examples in the world. A genuine collectors’ car.
