1991 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6

  • Mostly stock original vehicle
  • Increasingly rare car
  • Meticulously maintained prior to dry storage starting in 2016
  • Just in need of a mild recommissioning and it’s set for the road

The Appeal

Produced from 1983 to 1999, the Peugeot 205 was built as a replacement for the Peugeot 104; however, it was indeed destined for a much larger impact on the world of motoring. With its sleek and aggressive stance, fully independent suspension with Macpherson struts up front and torsion arms at the rear, the 205 saw great success in both European sales and importantly, success in rally racing.

The 205 GTI, released along side the other versions of the car, was Peugeot’s sporting variant. With a rev-happy 1.6l engine producing around 104 horsepower, and the vehicle weighing in just under 900kgs, it was a recipe for success. Often considered a benchmark for small and nimble hatchbacks, the 205 has also gained a cult following thanks in part to its successful homologation into Group B rally with the 205 Turbo 16, modified extensively from its road-going counterpart as we have here.

This Pug in particular is notably a one-owner vehicle, with the current owner purchasing it new in 1991. Based on the current condition of the car, it is instantly visible that the owner has loved and enjoyed the car to its fullest, but has never neglected to show it respect with routine maintenance and proper upkeep. Sporting its original interior and paintwork, this 205 remains in a highly original state from Peugeot.

The car has been dry stored since 2016, and will need only a light recommissioning before getting back on the road, as there was a full service performed in 2015, right before storage. While the car doesn’t currently run, the current owner has purchased, and will include a new fuel pump as pictured, which is the suspected culprit.

The Interior

  • Overall interior in excellent original condition, but some signs of wear and use present notably on the driver’s seat
  • Owner states all electronics, switches, buttons, and gauges work as they should
  • Dashboard and centre console in immaculate condition, all graphics and markings crisp and clear with no signs of fading
  • Fitted with aftermarket Pioneer head unit
  • Sterling alarm installed
  • Headlining in near perfect condition
  • Seats in great condition overall but could use a deep clean to bring them up to the level of the rest of the interior
  • Some heavy wear on the driver’s seat as pictured
  • Carpets in excellent original condition, comes with ‘GTI Club’ floor mats and Peugeot heavy-duty weather mats
  • Boot in very good condition visually, but some paint marks on boot floor, see photos
  • Underneath boot floor, some rubber sound deadening is deteriorating as pictured
  • Original boot privacy tray/parcel shelf in great condition, comes with additional bespoke shelf fitted with Pioneer 130w speakers fitted

The Exterior

  • Original factory paintwork in excellent condition with only usual marks from the road on the front bumper and bonnet
  • There are some small dents present on the rear left side rear hatch pillar, and on the front left wing as pictured, could likely be repaired with paintless dent repair tools
  • Trim, rubbers, and seals are in excellent condition
  • Light lenses in excellent condition, headlights show some slight fading/cloudiness from age
  • HID lights fitted
  • Glass in overall excellent condition windshield having been replaced in its lifetime
  • Sunroof opens easily and in great condition, fitted with factory Peugeot wind deflector later in its life
  • All emblems and badges in like-new state
  • Original wheels in great condition, some kerb rash present but not detracting from the overall condition of the car
  • Underside in good overall condition, with some signs of corrosion present; next owner would be advised to check rear brakes and rear suspension mounting points which show some rust as pictured

The Mechanics

  • Owner states vehicle was in excellent overall working condition before dry storage, having just completed a full service very few miles ago
  • Currently, a suspected fuel pump issue is stopping the car from starting, however we were able to hear the engine running on starter spray, valvetrain was quiet and engine seemed to run well; owner has sourced fuel pump and will supply with sale
  • K&N air filter system installed
  • Full Magnex performance exhaust system fitted, remaining in excellent condition
  • Visual condition of the engine bay is overall very good, clean, and tidy with no obvious signs of corrosion present
  • Original 1.6L engine presents well visually, with no signs of leaking
  • The owner informs us the vehicle is an absolute pleasure to drive when running, but would suggest a brake overhaul before returning to the road in addition to replacing the fuel pump
  • The car will need to be transported to its next home

This 205 would be a smart choice as an occasional B-road charmer after a light recommissioning and return to the road after its period of storage. This is the perfect opportunity to own a stunning mostly-original GTI with incredible character and racing heritage; a prime example of what is coming to be a very rare car indeed. It is just begging to be brought out and enjoyed, and after a little bit of TLC, could just as easily fit right into any Peugeot collector or rally fan’s fleet.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
