THE APPEAL

Do you fancy taking a trip down memory lane, where the hot hatches of the 90s were plentiful and a common sight?

Not so common today, and certainly not this example which is an original Peugeot 309 GTI16. This model was produced for a short time and used the MI16 engine from the 405.

They were built only in left-hand drive because of issues with the bigger engine clearing the master cylinder. The 309 GTI16 also featured stiffer suspension, a stiffer torsion bar to the rear and a slightly wider track.

With 30 more bhp, the GTI16 was a little hidden gem in the Peugeot hot hatch range.

This car has been well cared for throughout the 10-year ownership and although not used a great deal it has been in dry storage.

However, with a house renovation project on the go, the seller has decided it is time to part with the 90s hot hatch to help fund the creation of his perfect family home.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • V5 is present
  • Registered in the UK 4th June 1992
  • Rolling road print out at 160bhp
  • MOT valid until 2nd July 2022
This 1991 Peugeot 309 GTI16 was imported into the UK from Europe in 1992.

It had 5 previous keepers with the last one being the seller’s friend who owned it for a number of years. He was not using the car which meant it was just sitting there, and so our seller persuaded him to sell it rather than letting it waste away and fall into disrepair.

This was ten years ago and when the seller got the car he carried out some minor work before getting it repainted by his local bodyshop.

The respray was done in the original gloss black colour and has stood the test of time, as you can see. The car is believed to have had fast road cams fitted, but some paperwork has been misplaced in a house move.

The vehicle was taken to Bengry’s Tuning Centre to be set up on the rolling road where it produced 160 bhp.

THE INTERIOR

  • Original Interior
  • 100,962 miles
  • 6x9 speakers and amp
  • Well presented
The inside of the Peugeot 309 GTI16 is all as it should be.

The velour seats are in good condition, with the front showing minor signs of any excessive wear to them other than some age related creasing as you would expect. The rear seat is in good condition and doesn't look to have had much use in its time.

The door cards are in good order with no damage, although the offside has creased a little at the bottom, but nothing to raise concern. The electric window switches mounted in the door pocket are in good condition and operate as they should.

The carpets are in blue to match the upholstery, and these have faded a little, which is quite common on vehicles of this age. There is a set of mats fitted which does make this less noticeable.
The steering wheel is in good order and has the GTI panel to the centre. The instruments are reported to be working correctly, and the odometer is showing a reading of 100,962 miles.

The switch gear is in good condition with little wear to the buttons. The head unit is the factory Clarion and is connected to shelf mounted 6x9 speakers and an amplifier mounted in the boot to the back of the rear seat, very 1990s!

The boot floor is nice and clean and shows no areas for concern. Also in place is the spare alloy wheel attached to the underside of the floor.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Repainted in the original gloss black ten years ago
  • Speedline alloy wheels
  • New Toyo Proxes tyres
  • New fog lights

Finished in Gloss Black, as mentioned, the car was repainted by a friend ten years ago and has clearly stood up well.

Beginning at the front of the GTI, there are no noticeable stone chips to point out other than an odd few gathered over the years, but nothing excessive. The fog lights took a while to find but have been replaced and are in excellent condition.

The headlights and indicators are also in good order with no chips or splits to the lenses. The grille has Peugeot colours to finish it off. These have split a little on the vinyl but should not be a difficult item to replace.

The bonnet looks to align as it should, and the windscreen has no chips. Unfortunately, there are some scratches on the windscreen caused by a wiper at some point in its life.
Looking down the sides of the French classic there are a couple of small light dents which can be seen in the right light. The doors look to align as they should with matching panel gaps.

There is some blistering at the bottom of the offside rear quarter where it meets the sill. The window seals look to be in good condition and there are no excessive scratches to the glass other than some light age related marks.
At the rear, everything looks to be in good order, with no splits to the light lenses, and the bumper is free from any scuffs. The hatch does look like it has rubbed a little on the quarter and the paint has come off, this may just need the hatch adjusting.
The wheels on the Peugeot are the more sought after Speedlines, which have been refurbished and finished in bright silver. The matching Toyo Proxes tyres are in as new condition having only covered a few hundred miles.

THE MECHANICS

  • 1.9 litre 16 valve PSA XU engine
  • 5-Speed Manual gearbox
  • Peugeot 307 front disc conversion
  • Bilstein shock absorbers,
As mentioned this rare model 309 was fitted with the 405 Mi16 engine giving it 30bhp extra over the standard GTI.

The car starts up as it should with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay.

The car is reported by the seller to drive as it should and the car pulls well through the 5-speed gearbox with a smooth change, and there are no noises coming from the transmission which shouldn’t be there.
The GTI has had the rear torsion bar system completely overhauled with new bushes where necessary and Bilstein shock absorbers fitted. The ride height has been set a little lower than standard which also adds to the fantastic handling of this hot hatch.

The seller always felt that the car was a little under braked with having the bigger engine, so as a precaution he has fitted discs and calipers from the later model Peugeot 307 which fill the Speedline wheels just right and bring the car quickly to a halt.

SUMMARY

This is your perfect chance to step into the hot hatch you always wanted!

Remember this is the more sought after model and extremely rare nowadays with the factory fitted MI16 engine.

The more powerful 309 GTI16 which also has fast road cams improving the performance even further, and helping it handle are Bilstein shock absorbers to the front and rear.

What are you waiting for, it’s time to relive your youth.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
