The Appeal
The 964 looked like an evolution of the classic 911, most notably its integrated impact bumpers, but it was really a revolution. Claimed to be 85% different from its predecessor, it notably featured a brand new flat six engine, the M64, and a switch from torsion bars to shocks that significant improved the handling.
Built for only a few short years, these are rare cars but their galvanised bodies and those improvements make them a great enthusiast choice. This Carrera 2 Cabriolet dates from 1991 and has covered just 68,,000 documented miles. It is finished in the appealing combination of Midnight Blue metallic with grey leather that is piped in black. There is also a manual box to add to the undoubted road-going entertainment.
The car has been sparingly used in recent years, but recently completed the 2,000 mile Cannes Classic without issue. In preparation it received extensive work in 2024 to the fuelling system. Together with a service this work, by a renowned Porsche specialist, totalled £6,000. The roof has also been upgraded to 993 specification, an upgrade recommended by enthusiasts.
The car has full service history by main dealers and specialists up to 66,000 miles in 2024. Other maintenance highlights include an engine-out top end rebuild in 2018, since when the car has covered just 3,000 miles. In 2022 there was a lengthy list of manifold and related repairs that delivered a bill of £2,400. It is sold with a fresh 12 months MOT.
The car is in great condition with only very minor points to note in photos. With all that recent and historic work, it is said to run well - as that trip to Cannes proves. Here is a chance to buy Porsche’s capable, charismatic and entertaining summer drop top.
The vendor says:
“The car is brilliant: very comfortable, eager, and much fun. I can't imagine many better ways of getting from A to B in the sunshine when something classic and reliable is needed. If we weren't downsizing, there's no way I'd sell it.”
