1991 Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk2

Highlights

  • Extensively restored between 2016 and 2019
  • MOT valid until March 2025
  • Accompanied by a substantial and carefully curated history file
  • A rare find in such good unmodified condition

The Appeal

While it always will be a hotly debated subject, many would say that the Mk2 was Volkswagen’s best Golf GTi. A refinement of the original recipe, the Mk2 was larger, safer and more powerful than its predecessor, without being substantially heavier nor straying far from that pure, uncluttered Giugiaro design.
Original, unmodified examples in good condition are vanishingly rare and immensely sought after. It took the vendor a while to source this one. Indeed, it was the best original Mk2 GTi 16v the vendor could find.
The vendor reflects, “I wanted a car that could be enjoyed immediately and that would also provide a sound investment if stored and maintained correctly. It remains a superb original example that still looks and drives amazingly well for a 33-year-old car.
When the vendor acquired the GTi, it was fresh from an extensive restoration completed between 2016 and 2019. It required substantial corrosion repairs, all of which were carried out to an exemplary standard prior to painstaking refinishing in the original and rare Royal Blue. The interior is commendably original, beautifully preserved and superbly presented, while the mechanicals underwent a comprehensive overhaul during the restoration which included a precautionary head gasket replacement. It’s been recently serviced again in readiness for sale and the vendor has no known issues to report.
A change in career will take the vendor away from home for long periods, so they have decided to find the Golf a new custodian. It could well be yours, so don’t miss this fantastic opportunity.

The History and Paperwork

  • MOT valid until 19th March 2025
  • Eleven former registered keepers - three since the completion of the restoration in 2019
  • Original book pack present and service book complete
  • Latest service performed on 19/03/2024
  • Substantial collection of old MOT certificates and bills dating back to 2002
  • Unfortunately, there’s no documentary evidence of the restoration that took place between 2016-2019, although we do have a record of which specialist completed the various jobs from when the car was last sold
  • The vendor acquired the car in March 2021 and has covered little more than 2,000 miles of dry motoring since
  • It has driven approximately 8,000 miles during the last eight years
  • Covered and garaged when not in use

The Condition

  • Frankies of Finmere carried out the bodywork restoration
  • All the previous corrosion was cut out and replaced with fresh steel
  • The bodywork now appears arrow-straight and the doors fit neatly
  • Fully resprayed in Royal Blue to a great standard
  • Aside from a small area of rubbing on the sunroof, the striking paintwork looks outstanding with barely a stone chip to report
  • There’s a slight scuff on the nearside of the front bumper, but this is barely noticeable
  • The glass presents beautifully, as do all the badges and light lenses
  • The original BBS alloy wheels are in fine order for their age and are shod with matching Bridgestone tyres
  • The interior is in lovely original condition including period correct cassette radio, the seats are firm and comfortable whilst the beautifully retro rainbow cloth is taught, tight and virtually unmarked
  • Everything reportedly works as it should
  • The headlining catches slightly when the sunroof is opened and the passenger door fabric, whilst fully fully intact, has slightly pulled away in a couple of small areas
  • The underside appears solid and corrosion free and was professionally waxoyled in 2020

The Mechanics

  • 1.8-litre DOHC 16v l4
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • The car now sits upon adjustable coil overs which greatly improve the handling and road holding while (at present) positioned at the correct factory ride height
  • We’re informed that the engine starts readily and runs sweetly
  • The vendor informs us that there are no obvious leaks
  • Head gasket replaced during the restoration (although not failed) along with the cam belt, water pump and other service items
  • The engine compartment looks highly original and presents superbly
  • Recently serviced (19/03/2024) with no issues highlighted
