The VW Golf GTI MK2 is one of the all-time hot hatch icons, with a huge following across the world.
It’s also one of the most modified cars of its era, such is the scope and breadth of the Volkswagen scene, with a huge market for both standard and well-modified examples of the car.
This one is far from standard – apart from the visual differences – the lower ride height and Golf G60 arches being the obvious giveaways, under the bonnet the original 16v engine has been ditched in favour of VW’s beefy 2.9-litre V6 “VR6” engine, as found in the Corrado and Mk3 Golf.
But this is no hotch-potch thrown-together project – it’s a beautifully executed and properly engineered car presented in fabulous overall condition.

Engine change declared on V5C
Clifford concept 500 alarm with tracker (transferrable)
Black leather with white piping
Momo sports steering wheel
Excellent carpets and headlining
Sony Bluetooth head unit with upgraded JBL speakers all round and subwoofer
The interior of the Golf was subject to a full retrim several years ago, before the vendor acquired it.
It features black leather with white piping which is still in good overall order, but does now have a few small blemishes and marks. The door cards are trimmed to match the seats and it comes with a sports Momo steering wheel.
It is fitted with a Sony Bluetooth head unit with upgraded JBL speakers all round including a subwoofer.
It’s spotlessly clean, with good carpets and excellent headlining.
Full respray three years ago in original colour
BBS 15 inch alloys with wider rears tyres
Sunroof with no leaks
The vendor acquired the car around four years ago and after the first year of ownership, he elected to have it fully resprayed in its original black.
It looks terrific and is still in outstanding condition.
It sits on red 15-inch BBS lattice alloy wheels, wider at the rear than the front, with good tyres all-round.
To give it greater presence, it also has wide G60 front arches and additional VR6 badges, yet the appearance is still stealthy and subtle. It’s a great-looking car presented in excellent condition.
There is no visible damage and the vendor reports that it is excellent underneath.
2,861 cc V6
Five-speed manual transmission
Emerald standalone ECU
Forged Maxspeed rods
The engine conversion was carried out in January of 2021, at which stage the 2.9-litre VR6 unit was completely rebuilt before it was reinstalled in the car.
It features an Emerald ECU and forged Maxspeed rods, which will allow you to take the power beyond the initial 190bhp should you so desire. A new clutch was also installed at the time of the rebuild.
It features lowered suspension riding on FK coilovers, but not so much as to drop it to a level where speed humps are an issue.
The vendor says that it is a very quick and rewarding car to drive and is a proper installation, with no corners having been cut.
It is sold in good running order and with no known faults or running issues.
There are modified Golfs and there are properly modified Golfs – this one is the latter.
A correctly built, beautifully presented and well-engineered take on the classic Mk2 GTI, in superb condition inside and out and with the potential to take it even further if you wanted to go for big power.
As it stands, it’s a lively and extremely smart example that will already turn a lot of heads.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.
£0 to £10,000
£10,000 to £50,000
£50,000 to £100,000
Automatically outbid immediately
When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours. You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
What are pre-bids?
A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.
Problem with your bid
Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
