The Appeal
The W201 was a £2.5 billion punt by Mercedes to enter the mass market. Of that vast sum, a third was spent solely developing the clever multilink rear suspension. The gambit worked, with close to 1.9M sold over the car’s 11 year run.
Today the 190 is a really usable, stylish classic saloon, which explains why it is garnering renewed interest from collectors. These cars were born at a time when Mercedes put everything on the options list, so good specification and the right engine makes cars stand out. This very tidy Smoke Silver 1992 car is equipped with optional electric sunroof and windows and factory alloys, so scores on that front, and also has the desirable 2.6L 160bhp straight six motor.
Thanks to a very low mileage of 51,000 miles it is in great condition, helped by spending a large part of its life on salt-free Channel Islands roads. The history file shows regular servicing by main dealers and specialists with the vendor advising £4,000 has been spent within the last 1,400 miles. At 49,700 miles the car received new head gasket, radiator and service by specialist Mercare. The car was recommissioned in June 2026 and comes to market with a long MOT.
The joy of these cars is that they work as daily drivers or weekend show cars. This one would do both well.
The vendor says:
“Car is a real pleasure to drive, very good smooth power from it's 6 cyl engine and cruises beautifully. Exudes a feeling of quality and traditional Mercedes Benz engineering. This 2.6 litre version provides performance close to the Cosworth but without the complexity of that model and is a whole step above the 2.0 litre 4 cylinder car.”
