THE APPEAL

The 1990s was a great time for the mid-engined sports cars, with Toyota taking the sector by storm when it launched the original MR2 in 1984.

The second generation arrived in 1989 and brought a much softer and more curvaceous profile. The interior was also more spacious and luxurious than its predecessor.

Nowadays it is getting much harder to find a genuine MR2 that hasn't led a hard life, or been converted into a pretend Ferrari.

Which is why this 1993 Toyota MR2 GT-i Coupe is a very special example.

With just a smidge over 22,000 miles on the clock, this typically 90s sports car is about as close as you can get to a new one, as examples like this very rarely come to market.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

• V5C in owner's name
• Original Handbook Pack plus Service Book with 9 stamps
• 2 Keys

This Toyota MR2 GT-i Coupe was first registered in August 1993 and is believed to have been first used by Toyota GB Limited as a staff car.

At some point it was sold on to its second owner. It was then taken in as a part exchange by the Motorline Toyota dealership in Gatwick, approximately 8 years ago.

Realising they had acquired what was likely one of the finest examples of the brand's greatest sport cars, the decision was made to put the MR2 on display in the showroom.

It was later moved into storage at the dealership's warehouse, where it remained untouched for many years.

THE INTERIOR

• Original interior in virtually unmarked condition
• Original toolkit
• Factory removable sunroof
• Factory stereo

The interior of this Toyota MR2 looks as good as it did when it left the factory in 1993.

It really is impressive how well preserved it is. There is even a hint of a new car smell still present when you open the door. That’s how good this MR2 is!

The cloth seats are in excellent condition as are the carpets and everything from the steering wheel to the gearshift, handbrake and peddles have virtually no wear to them.

All the switches on the dashboard are fresh and mark free, with the exception of a little white inlay missing from the cigarette lighter. But that is just nit picking as everything else looks so good.

One of the Toyota MR2’s party tricks is its removable sunroof and that too, along with the headliner, is like new. It pops open with ease and stows away in its special spot in the front boot.

Another neat feature of the MR2 was the manually adjustable seat lumbar support that came as standard. There is a 2nd lumbar handle in the glovebox, which is likely an original that broke many years ago and was then replaced. It's then owner at the time clearly decided to keep it rather than throw it away.

The current owner notes that the original factory-installed stereo is showing a code error and as a result needs to be recoded.

This is likely a result of the car being in storage for an extended period.

THE EXTERIOR

This particular Toyota MR2 was ordered in Zircon Blue Metallic, which is a colour that really suits the lines of the mid-engined sports car.

It is actually refreshing to see one in another colour other than red, which always gave the model a hint of Ferrari to its appearance. This colour blue really shines and has clearly benefited from being in storage for so long.

The metallic paint is in very good condition all round with some small light scratches and minor scuffs that would benefit from a paint correction. There is also a small area on the right spoiler edge where the paint is worn, which was probably caused by wear from a car cover in storage.

The alloy wheels are in good condition with a few marks evident. It is likely they have been refurbished in the past. A pair of Yokohomas are fitted on the rear, with a pair of Pirellis fitted on the front.

The Bridgestone Tragompa space saver in the front boot appears to be unused and is possibly the original factory-supplied spare.

THE MECHANICS

• 2.0 litre twin cam with 156BHP • 5 Speed gearbox
• MOT until 30th January 2023

The twin cam MR2 fired up on the button with that distinctive electronic ignition sound that is a hallmark of this era Toyota.

It also idled very nicely as it was moved around and parked up for the photoshoot.

The mid-mounted engine bay is clean and hasn’t been detailed, as the owner wanted to leave it in as is condition. There are some signs of oxidation to some of the engine bolts, fittings etc, but a lot of them still retain their factory coating which is really nice to see.

All the factory stickers are present and in good condition and the only rust that is visible is a bracket on the engine cover which is shown in the photos. The seller states that the clutch bite point is a little high and after 29 years, it is likely time for the MR2 to have a new clutch fitted.

During its MOT in January this year it was noted that the exhaust is corroded and has a slight blow. Again the system is likely the original exhaust that was fitted at the factory in 1993.

The underside is showing some signs of surface corrosion that would benefit from being cleaned and treated.

The cars last documented service was at 19,884 miles in October 2004. It has covered just 2,167 since.

SUMMARY

This is one of the nicest Toyota MR2 GT-i Coupes we have seen for some time and it could well be one of the best preserved examples on the market right now.

This car really does take us back to the 1990s.

It's time capsule like condition will make it a must buy for collectors of one of the great classic Japanese mid-engined sports cars.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
