1994 Mercedes-Benz 320 SL R129

****** Interested parties should note, this vehicle was subject to a CAT N insurance loss in 11/2022 ******

  • Extensive service record: maintained by Mercedes-Benz in its early to mid years, then by independent specialists, namely the SL shop
  • Just three keepers and stored inside until recently
  • All oils replaced including gearbox, coolant, brake fluid
  • Registered in the UK, making it easier for European buyers

The Appeal

Following the gorgeous W113 Pagoda and equally impressive R107, Mercedes-Benz were on a roll with the SL, so it's fair to say the long-awaited R129 had big shoes to fill...

Fortunately, it was to be hat-trick and Bruno Sacco's take on the SL proved equally enticing to buyers.

This 320 has been well-maintained throughout its life, with an extensive service record with Mercedes-Benz main dealers and independent specialists. It has only had three owners and has been stored indoors until recently, preserving its condition. The car has also recently had all oils replaced, including gearbox, coolant, and brake fluid, ensuring it runs smoothly.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1994
  • Just three keepers
  • 66,058 miles indicated
  • Sold just over two years ago by a specialist in Shropshire for £13,000
  • MOT with no advisories, (expires March 2024)
  • Recorded CAT N loss a year ago: the only damage being the headlight glass and grill which has been repaired using period correct parts including the hard-to-source seven-slat grille
  • Unfortunately, much of the service history was lost

The Condition

  • A very sound example with smart bodywork and very presentable paint
  • Complete with both its roofs which appear in great shape
  • The retracting soft-top is reportedly in working order, with no apparent faults
  • Straight and free from notable corrosion topside and underneath
  • A small corrosion patch on the OSF wing has appeared within the last two months, but this does not appear excessive
  • The underside of the car looks in exceptional condition for its age
  • Remote key intermittently does not work, but central locking works perfectly when using the key in the lock - the vendor diagnoses a possible weak battery in the remote key
  • The car is entirely standard with no known modifications apart from a Bluetooth radio
  • The interior presents really well, with well-presented leather upholstery and nice woodwork
  • Age-related marks are of course present, but there's nothing especially noticeable to report
  • We understand all the cabin electrics and instrumentation to be in good working order

The Mechanics

  • 3.2-litre petrol straight-six
  • Automatic transmission with five gears
  • Nicely presented under the bonnet and all original
  • Benefitting from a recent oil and coolant service
  • Rear discs and pads have been replaced
  • The car drives superbly and the roof works perfectly
  • The gearbox and engine are reportedly very smooth and quiet in operation

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
