1994 Mercedes-Benz W124 E320 Cabriolet

Highlights

・A rare colour combination creating a truly eye-catching car
・A low mileage example with an average of just over 5K miles per year covered
・Mercedes Benz enthusiast maintained and cherished for the last four years

The Background

The W124 (the cabriolet version is officially the A124) was the successor to the very successful W123 model so had big shoes to fill. To ensure this happened Mercedes Benz lavished the W124 with technical innovations of the time. These included a very aerodynamic shape, partially fared underside to reduce noise and aid air-flow, the iconic single, eccentric sweep wiper and an exhaust oxygen sensor for the first time.

The History

This particular example was supplied new on 1st August 1994 via the Newgate Motor Company of Chester. It was enjoyed and lightly used by three owners before arriving with its current owner in 2017. The current owner is a Mercedes Benz enthusiast and serial owner of classic Mercedes models.

Since 2017 the current owner has done around 4,000 miles using the car as a summer treat to attend Mercedes Benz Car Club shows and to wharf around with friends generally enjoying the summer days on the highways and byways of the UK. The car has always been garaged during this period and not used in winter.

The Paperwork

The car comes with a good range of paperwork including stamped service book, numerous bills and invoices and MOT certificates back to 2005. The current MOT, valid until 25th May 2023 and detailing no advisories, is present as is the V5 in the current owner’s name.

The original dealer book pack is also present in the original wallet including owner’s manual and Mercedes Benz 10/30 audio unit user’s manual.

The Interior

The interior of mushroom coloured leather, contrasting wood veneer trim and complimentary light coloured wool carpets presents very well indeed. There is one small scratch in evidence on the veneer of the driver’s door, but the interior appears otherwise unmarked.

A key benefit of the W124 cabriolet is that it is a true four-seater and the rear cabin is not only capacious but appears equally pristine as the front cabin. The well insulated hood operates smoothly via powered articulation and stows completely under a body-coloured panel maintaining an uncluttered look but also promoting airflow and reducing noise.

The Exterior

The Polar White paintwork is another unusual feature of this particular example with the majority of W124’s presenting in dark colours. The subtle contrast with the pale grey bumper covers and “Sacco” side panels (Bruno Sacco was the Mercedes Benz design chief during the 1990’s) is particularly fetching.

The car has been subject to a full and professional respray during its previous ownership and now presents very well with a deep shine and lustre appropriate to a classic Mercedes Benz. There are a couple of very small marks in evidence. A small area of lacquer peel can be seen on the hood cover panel and there is a pea sized stone chip on one wheel arch.

The car has been extensively Waxoyl treated during the current owner’s tenure which included the removal of Sacco door and sill panels and door cards to facilitate a thorough treatment. The photographic package shows these areas uncovered affording a unique level of reassurance to the new owner.

The current owner has enjoyed many happy hours of polishing and fettling this car and, as can be seen, the exterior presentation of this car is a credit to his enthusiasm. Only on very close inspection can the odd, inevitable age-related mark be seen. Please see the photographic package for full details.

The Mechanics

The smooth running M104 3.2 litre, straight six petrol engine features double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The pick of the engine range for this car, the smooth six provides relaxed and quiet cruising but provides sufficient punch when called upon for overtaking and joining fast A roads and motorways.

The owner reports that the car starts well and idles smoothly. There are no reported oil leaks and oil consumption is well within factory specifications. The car stops well and pulls up in a straight line according to the owner.

A comprehensive maintenance schedule has been implemented in recent years. This includes a reconditioned steering box and new steering damper, new parking brake shoes, new front brake discs and pads, replacement radiator expansion tank, new front wheel bearings, replacement accelerator cable, professional restoration of the Mercedes 8 hole alloy wheels, new boot lid struts, replacement of an oil filter housing seal, replacement offside rear window motor and four new Michelin tyres, all of which still have 6mm tread depth.

The Appeal

This W124 Cabriolet is from the period that exemplifies the engineering prowess that Mercedes Benz’s success has been built on. These cars exude robust longevity but certainly not at the cost of style and panache which they deliver in spades.

This particular example has been lightly used throughout its life and maintained and cherished to a very high standard. The car is one of those special vehicles that makes every drive feel like a special occasion thanks to the luxuriously appointed interior, the refined mechanicals and the road presence of this head turning cruiser. Given this the W124 cabriolet enables the owner to share that special occasion feeling with up to three friends in full comfort being a capacious four-seater with a large boot.

The secret is starting to get out about the special nature of these cars and prices are reacting accordingly. Here is your chance to acquire a car which is ready to drive away and deliver many motoring memories and adventures for many years to come.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
