The Appeal

In the 1990s, with the company facing an uncertain future, Porsche finally recognised that the signature air-cooled flat-six engine that powered the-then current iteration of the iconic 911, the 993, was reaching the end of its life. The 996, launched in 1998, was the first water-cooled 911 and for Porsche purists this made its 993 predecessor an instant classic. Demand for the cars has remained high ever since and, twenty-five years on from its discontinuation, low-mileage examples of the 993, in outstanding condition, are few and far between.

Here, then, we have the Holy Grail of 993s, with only 26,000 miles on the clock, garaged for more than twenty years, and in superb condition inside and out.

The History and Paperwork

  • Original folder with all manuals
  • Original owner’s manual
  • Original service book with stamps
  • Manual for Sony Bluetooth stereo
  • Currently SORN
  • Lots of past MoT certificates
  • Invoices from throughout the car’s lifetime
  • Last MoT in 2019, but will be provided with a new MOT
  • Less than 2000 miles since 2011
The vendor acquired the car in 1998 and is the fifth owner. Since 2000 it has been stored, garaged, at his second home and used only very infrequently. As the car is so little used, in 2019 the vendor took it off the road altogether and the car is currently under a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN).

The past MoT certificates (there are lots) tell the story: less than 7000 miles covered since 2001, and only around 2000 miles covered since 2011.

The Interior

  • Grey leather seats
  • Superb grey carpets, protected by overmats
  • ‘+2’ rear seats
  • Electrically adjustable front seats
  • Excellent door cards
  • Leather-trimmed steering wheel
  • God instrument layout
  • Recent stereo with Bluetooth
  • Blaupunkt stereo amplifier
  • JBL speakers
  • Space saver spare wheel
  • Toolkit
  • Locking wheelnut
Even a cursory glance at the car’s interior shows that it’s been carefully looked after. You’d never guess that it’s approaching thirty years old. The grey leather seats are in extremely good condition, with only a couple of marks on the base of the passenger seat and some wear on the bolster of the driver’s seat. The rear ‘+2’ seats look virtually unused; the backs of these fold down to create a luggage shelf.

The leather-trimmed steering wheel has only a very slight patina, while the leather gaiter on the gear lever has a few marks.

More evidence of the car’s cherished existence can be seen on the carpets – the original grey carpet has been protected by overmats and these have then been protected by additional overmats.

The dashboard looks really good, with a nice simple layout and no evidence of damage to the leather dash-top, while the Sony stereo is a later addition. There’s a Blaupunkt amplifier wired into the sound system, which lives in the front luggage compartment with the space-saver spare wheel. Also present is a toolkit which looks unused, and the carpet liner for the front compartment is in excellent condition, with no stains or marks.

The Exterior

  • Bodywork in outstanding condition
  • Immaculate alloy wheels
  • Pirelli P-Zero tyres all round
  • Excellent badges and brightwork
  • Headlamps and rear lamps all unmarked
As you would expect from a car that has, in effect, been in storage since 2000, the bodywork here is superb. The silver paint looks fantastic and only if you look very hard can you make out some extremely fine scratches. The 993 was manufactured from high-quality galvanized steel and is renowned for its lack of susceptibility to corrosion; there’s none visible here.

All four alloy wheels are equally superb, with no kerb damage or corrosion, and all wear Pirelli P-Zero low-profile tyres.

The Mechanics

  • 3.6-litre air-cooled engine
  • Six-speed manual gearbox
  • Engine bay looks superb
For a car that’s been in storage so long, this one starts and runs beautifully. It was obvious, even on the short drive to our photo location (on the private estate where the car lives) that it performs as you would expect of a low-mileage performance car, and that distinctive air-cooled engine note was evident.

Open the engine cover and everything is in good order – again, it’s clear that this is a car that has been carefully looked after.

Summary

The 911 first appeared in 1964, and both the essential concept and the distinctive shape have remained much the same ever since; a two-door, 2+2, rear-engined, high-performance sports car.

The 993 ended the long history of air-cooled 911s, and acquired modern-classic status even while still in showrooms. It’s still a desirable and sought-after car.

There can be only a very few 993s left in this condition and with mileage still in the 20,000s – for any Porsche enthusiast, this is an opportunity not be missed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
