The Background

Assembled by coach builder Karmann, the Corrado was introduced in 1988 and briefly ran alongside the Scirocco, the car it was replacing, before staying in production as VW’s flagship performance car until 1995. Designed by Herbert Schäfer, it was a very modern coupe with its chunky, wedge profile.flush fit windows and although based on same VW A2 platform as the king of the ‘80s hot hatches, the Mk2 Gold GTi, the V6 models used uprated suspension, giving a wider track so these can be spotted by the wide front wings and different bumpers.

The History

This Corrado started life in Coventry, sold by Listers VW, it was main dealer serviced past the new millennium, reaching 75,000 miles by 2001. Since then it has been little used, covering only another 10,000 miles over the next two decades, moving for a few years to the Isle of Man where cars tend not to got very far, and more recently has been carefully looked after and with the current owner working away, been in kept in professional storage to keep the car ready to drive when wanted. Whilst in professional storage, the car was also subject a professional car maintenance programme.

The Paperwork

The car comes with its original book pack, containing the new owner books, leaflets and warrenty cards (these are now out of date!). The service book shows its pre delivery inspection and VW main dealer service stamps to 2001.

The paperwork folder has a good sheaf of receipts for maintenance and service over the years from VW main dealers and others.

The Interior

The fabric seats, with their typical ‘80s VW colour flecked tweed centres, are in excellent shape, there is little to show they’ve ever been sat it, and its possible the rear bucket seats never have! The carpets are also virtually unmarked.

The dashboard is also very good with hardly any marks to the black plastic, the leather gear knob has no marks and the steering wheel has a couple of light marks in the leather. While the door cards are extremely tidy, the plastic door pulls have picked up some scratches over the years, more on the drivers side where there are also some marks on the plastic door pocket from feet in and out.

In the dashboard is a Sony cassette player, which is tied to a CD changer in the boot, where the carpets are clean and under the floor is the spare wheel and tool kit.

The Exterior

The crisp white paint really shows off the clean lines of the car well, and looking around the VW there are virtually no blemishes to be found to either the paint or panels, the panel gaps are all even.

The lights and glass are all bright and clear and there is a factory metal sunroof up top, which the seller tells us was fully working on the last drive. Under the car the Speedline alloys are all unmarked with almost unused Toyo Proxes tyres all around, and glancing under the arches and floor reveals a solid looking floor pan. The electric rear spoiler is also working in full, as per the seller's last drive.

The Mechanics

Having not driven far recently it cant needed much maintenance beyond basic servicing, although it has had new front and rear brake callipers this summer as well as gaining a fresh MOT in July, and in 2017 the track rod ends and tie rods were replaced and new gaiters were fitted to finish the job properly.

On the photoshoot the V6 engine fired easily every time and sounded glorious, and the 5 speed manual was easy to select gears as we manoeuvred the car.

The Appeal

Cars of the 80s and 90s have never been more in demand, and the top of the range halo cars such as the VR6 are the coolest car on the block. For a car approaching 30 years old the mileage is modest and the condition is outstanding inside and out, this is a car that will turn heads as soon as the sound of the V6 approaches.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
