The Appeal
On its introduction the X306 XJR became Jaguar’s first supercharged car and only its second forced induction car after the legendary XJ220. The robust AJ16 engine was beefed up to a lusty 326bhp and a whopping 378 Ib-ft of torque as a consequence.
This gave the sporty saloon some real-world performance chops for the first time. The changes to the car were orchestrated by Jaguar’s racing team, TWR, so enhancements ran deeper than just a dollop of extra power. Although no match for the imperious BMW M5 in out and out performance, many would argue that the Jaguar’s charm was in higher league altogether.image00032.jpeg4.96 MB
The History and Paperwork
This XJR has covered a sensible 98,000 miles only
The bulk of this mileage being in its first 10 years
Owned by the previous enthusiast owner for 12 years
Due to ill health, it was dry stored for half of that time
Covered only 5,000 approximately in the last 10 years
In its current ownership the car has benefitted from a full cosmetic recommissioning
Professionally applied new paintwork has been applied to the main body
The car holds a valid MOT until January 2023
The current V5 is on hand
The car comes with the original Jaguar book pack
This includes the all-important service book
Previous MOT’s and associated invoices are included
The interior is sumptuously appointed as you would expect from a big Jaguar saloon of the period
Upholstery is a great condition, perforated cream leather
The capacious yet supportive seats are box pleated with double needle stitching
The front seats are electrically operated
The dash and centre console are equally, luxuriously dressed
These feature stitched and padded leather, against deeply varnished dark wood veneer
The door cards are dressed in padded, two-tone leather and faced with large panels wood veneer
Contrasting black carpets are in excellent used condition
A new headlining has been professionally fitted due to some previous areas of age-related sagging
The carpeted boot houses the CD auto-changer and full-sized, alloy spare wheel
The interior looks to be in great original condition and presents very well throughout
This XJR benefits from an especially attractive, and less common colourway. The interior is dressed in an exquisite cream leather, but this contrasts particularly well with the unusually dark accents of the cabin. The carpets, dash and door card tops and veneer in this example are all in dark shades. This makes for a very appealing and sporty feeling interior without diminishing any of the luxury associated with the XJ cars.
The Sapphire Blue Metallic paintwork appears to be in great overall condition
It is deep and shiny and thickly applied as you would expect for a Jaguar
The cosmetic recommissioning has clearly been professionally undertaken
New paintwork was professionally applied to address some usual areas of lacquer peel
No areas of corrosion were noted or reported
All doors and hinged panels open and close with ease and precision
Panel gaps appear to be admirably tight and symmetrical
The original light lenses are clear and unmarked front and rear
The original five spoke, slotted 17-inch Jaguar alloy wheels have been professionally restored
Consequently, these present in near-perfect condition and look amazing
The wheels are fitted with new tyres all round in a 255/45 configuration
New silencers with new chrome tips have been fitted
The cabin glass appears to be in a fine, unmarked condition throughout
This presents so well in the Sapphire Blue colourway. The newly refreshed paintwork, refurbished wheels with new tyres and shiny exhaust tips combine to make this a really eye-catching example of the XJR breed. It also helps future-proof the car by addressing all the key areas of age-related deterioration on the X306
This XJR is fitted with the Eaton Supercharged AJ-16 straight six engine
Originally boasting nearly 326bhp and torque to match
Power is fed to the rear wheels via a 5-speed GM automatic gearbox
A new battery has recently been fitted
The car has had a recent full service
Brake disks and pads have been replaced all round
Given this recent attention, its full service history and sympathetic ownership the car is reported to be in excellent mechanical condition by the current owner
The underside is understood to be dry and free of oil leaks
This XJR goes as well as it looks thanks to a lifetime of fastidious maintenance and some very intelligent recommissioning by the current owner.
The XJR provides a memorable driving experience too. Perfectly able, of course, to potter around almost silently when required. However, open the taps until the big supercharger starts to emit its subtle whine and you have supercar threatening performance on demand. It’s one of the automotive world’s most compelling experiences.image00004.jpeg1.05 MB
Summary
XJR’s of this calibre don’t come around too often. The current owner, a Jaguar aficionado, has addressed the common niggles that can affect XJR’s of this age. This means the new owner can look forward to a worry-free ownership experience.
The car looks so good too. The refreshed Sapphire Blue Metallic paintwork over the cream leather interior with dark accents suits this long, low car so well. The refurbished slotted alloy wheels finish it off perfectly. This is your opportunity to own a really exceptional example of this increasingly rare, British executive express.
