The Appeal
The Volvo 850 T-5R is one of the most celebrated performance saloons of the 1990s. Co-developed with Porsche, its 243bhp turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine, complete with a timed overboost function, transformed Volvo's reputation from dependable family transport into something altogether more spirited. Capable of dispatching 0–62 mph in around six seconds, the T-5R earned its "flying brick" nickname and has since developed a devoted cult following among enthusiasts.
This Stone Black example is specified with the five-speed manual gearbox, a configuration that represents a tiny fraction of T-5R production and is particularly scarce among UK-market cars, where the overwhelming majority left the factory as automatics. The engine was rebuilt in 2019, with a new turbocharger and various ancillaries fitted later that year. Further mechanical work followed in 2021, including a new clutch assembly, suspension overhaul and air conditioning service. A main dealer service was carried out in September 2024, and the car has covered fewer than 1,000 miles since. The service book contains 11 stamps, supplemented by invoices documenting the mechanical investment this car has received. For the Volvo enthusiast seeking one of the rarest iterations of the 850, this manual T-5R warrants serious attention.
