The Appeal

Four seats, a powerful V8 drivetrain, room for a week’s worth of luggage and, of course, those iconic pop-up headlamps. Yes, the BMW E31 was every inch the grand tourer. It remains coveted today, with good examples highly sought after.

Here we have a very chic example, presented with recently refreshed paintwork, a fine service record, long MOT and excellent specification. Possessed of the later, larger 4.4-litre V8, this 840Ci would be absolutely ideal as a special occasion car, or as a modern classic to enjoy and display at shows and meets.

The Exterior

Deep blue paintwork presents very well, with minimal signs of blemishing
The vendor tells us that the car was resprayed just last year
We’re also informed that the 17-inch multispoke wheels have been recently refurbished and that new tyres have been fitted
Pop-up headlights are functioning as they should
All of the external trim, badging, lenses and glass areas look to be in good order, with no damage we could observe
Overall, the car presents very well externally, with no signs of notable damage or corrosion we could see

The Mechanics

Revised 4,398cc atmospheric V8 engine
Rated at 282bhp from the factory, delivered to the rear wheels
The engine bay is nice and clean, with no signs of leaks or damage
5-speed automatic transmission
We’re told that the car has just been serviced
It has also had a new rear exhaust fitted
The vendor assures us that the car runs and drives very well, with no mechanical issues that they are aware of

Summary

There can be few cars that tick as many boxes as a true four-seat grand tourer. Sporting, practical and eminently capable, they almost offer the perfect combination of talents. And, in our opinion, the E31 is one of the very finest modern grand tourers. With that excellent V8 drivetrain, a high specification, gorgeous retro styling and, let’s not forget, pop-up lights, it certainly makes a heck of a case for itself.

Add to this the fact that this particular model is presented in rather good condition, with a fine service record, and we think this is something of a steal. One of the finest cars of the 90s? Almost certainly. The next car to appear on your driveway? It probably should be…
