The 1990s was a bit of a purple patch for the supermini market, with small cars very much in vogue. It was an era that gave us some absolute gems such as the Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat Punto and Nissan Micra K11, all of which put a bit of pizzaz into the small car market.
The Volkswagen Polo 6N was Germany’s contribution. It was bigger and more solidly built that some of its rivals and felt more mature from behind the wheel, but with showroom appeal of the era being all about youthful exuberance, the Polo had to up its game to stand out.
In 1996, the SE Special Edition did just that. Offered in a range of vibrant colours, it also had a plush specification – electric windows, a sunroof, Sony radio-cassette, Fox alloy wheels and a wonderfully Nineties interior trim unique to the model.
This one was supplied new by Vindis VW of Cambridge to a couple just up the road in St Ives, who are its only two recorded keepers – husband and wife. The car was in regular use and fully serviced until 2019 when the husband passed away and the car was passed on to his wife, from whom the vendor acquired it at the start of 2024. It hadn’t been used since the husband’s passing, and has been recommissioned with a service, new front tyres and a comprehensive check-over.
