The R107 generation of the SL was certainly a tough act to follow. But the R129 managed it - capturing the previous generation’s achingly cool, timeless chic and built to the legendary standards Mercedes-Benz were then renowned for. Now very much a modern classic, good examples are sought after and very usable.
This smart black SL 320 is a handsome example that the vendor assures us is as sound mechanically as it is cosmetically. It benefits from a good recent service history, as well as a long MOT and high specification. Certainly, there can’t be many more stylish ways to waft about this summer…1997-mercedes-sl-320-auto-642efc8607c29.jpeg1.41 MB
The black paintwork appears to be in pretty good order overall, with the vendor telling us that they believe the car has been previously resprayed
There is the odd minor blemish and stone chip, as well as a small scrape on the rear bumper that has been touched in, but nothing that would concern us
All of the bodywork looks straight and true, with clean lines and no evidence of damage or significant corrosion
We note a small amount of corrosion to the near-side front wing
There is a crack to the lower front bumper, just underneath the registration plate
The brightwork presents well overall with some dulling to the three-pointed star and grill
Removable hardtop is present and correct, offering practical all-weather ability
The fabric roof looks to be in fine fettle, with no sagging, tears or UV damage we could discern
We’re told that the hydraulic mechanism for the roof operates smoothly, having recently received new fluid
Front headlamp wipers
Classic ‘eight hole’ 16-inch alloy wheels, finished in silver and with a pleasing sheen
The wheels are shod with a matched set of Pirelli Cinturato tyres
We’re informed by the vendor that the underside is in good condition
We’re told the front wishbones have been renewed, as have the horns and ABS sensor
The vendor informs us that a full gearbox and normal service has also been carried out with all filters and air con replaced
We’re assured that the car drives well, starting, idling, driving and stopping as it should – the vendor tells us that it has proven to be a very reliable machine
With a smooth inline-six and that oh-so-practical combination of hardtop and fabric roofs, this R129 makes a great case for itself. A good recent service record and long MOT should give buyers confidence that this handsome grand tourer has many adventures left in it yet…
