The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz W124 E-Class coupé and cabriolet set a very high bar for the luxury automotive market, with the series continuing to be highly sought after by classic and motoring enthusiasts alike, mainly down to its well-won reputation for its build quality and engineering excellence.
This full-size 4-seater convertible is in a fantastic colour combination and excellent original, unmolested condition both inside and out. Reassuringly, it comes with that all-important full-service record and history from new. A modern classic that is practical enough for daily use, this is most certainly a car that will continue to appreciate in the years to come. The vendor believes it to be the best example of an E220 cabriolet available on the market today, an assertion we find hard to argue with; it really is that good and true.
History & Paperwork
Currently MOT’d, of course, the V5 is present showing only 2 previous owners and there are numerous MOTs from the present and previous keepers, including a fully stamped up service book with Mercedes Dealers and specialists. Invoices dating back to 1998 back up this vast history file and provide even more peace of mind. The car comes with two working remote keys, first aid kit, toolkit, warning triangle and all the original Owner’s set of handbooks, including the radio code card and booklet.
The W124 series of E-Class Mercedes is one of the most iconic and respected cars in motoring circles that many consider to be the best Mercedes ever built. They were incredibly well put together and over-engineered, earning a reputation for being bulletproof and being easily capable of racking up a million miles with regular maintenance and servicing.
This E220 cabriolet was the final expression of the W124 range, first registered in 1997, and features a four-speed automatic transmission with sport and winter modes, electrically operated door mirrors, Air conditioning, heated seats, and illuminated vanity mirrors. The pristine example presented here is finished in 269 Tourmaline Metallic over mushroom full leather, a wonderful colourway, very evocative of the era. It has been garaged its entire life, presents in near-showroom condition, and comes with a full book pack, including its original stamped service book backed up by invoices.
If you have been looking for a four-seater classic Mercedes-Benz to enjoy and invest in, look no further; you have found the right one to bid on and hopefully win.
Purchased new in March 1997 from Mercedes-Benz main dealer, Pentagon. This elegant cabriolet still wears its original dealer plates and window sticker. It is obvious from its condition that the car has had a pampered life, always garaged,d and a vast stack of invoices backs up this assertion.
The Condition
The high-quality Mushroom beige leather interior still looks in great original condition, and the thick, supple leather used on the seats gives the interior an air of opulence few cars can match. The draft deflector originally supplied with the car is included, and the door cards, dashboard and instruments are all in very good shape and work perfectly, as do all the switchgear. The original Mercedes-Benz Audio 10 is still there and working, as is the electric aerial.
The wood veneer, the headlining, and all the carpets and original over-mats are clean and undamaged, and the door kick plates remain nice and scratch-free. The boot is clean and dry and features a first-aid kit, a factory-fitted Michelin unused spare tyre, a jack, and tools.
The Tourmaline Metallic paintwork (code 269) is still in excellent condition, obviously benefiting from being garaged throughout its life. Hardly any scratches or scuffs were visible on this car, which is a credit to its former keepers. To be picky, there are a couple of tiny touch-ups here and there, but barely noticeable. The original and correct eight-hole light alloy wheels, last re-furbished and diamond cut a little while ago, still look in great shape,e and all wear good tyres. The body is straight and true with shut lines and trim all being as they should be.
The original black hood fits snugly, and there is no sign of any water ingress anywhere. The electric hood mechanism works smoothly, and all the lights are clear, with rubber seals showing no signs of fading or cracking. axoyled from new and re-treated over the years, the underneath of the car looks very solid too.
The Mechanics
Mechanically, this car has been very well cared for throughout its life, as evidenced by its current appearance and driving performance. One glance under the bonnet will reassure the next owner that this car has been well looked after. It’s nice and clean with no signs of any oil or fluid leaks, and everything looks as it should.
The car starts on the first turn of the key and drives superbly, with no obvious or known issues to advise. Having just been serviced and the factory air conditioning working as it should, the new owner can be assured of a wonderful driving experience for years to come.
