The Appeal
Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH & Co. KG may be the longest name ever adopted by a car manufacturer, but the first part of its name is enough to make any motoring enthusiast sit up and take notice. As a dedicated manufacturer rather than merely an aftermarket retuner, Alpina is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. It has long since perfected the art of taking BMWs and elevating them into true driver’s cars.
The late-Nineties B10 represented a particularly successful take on BMW’s 5-Series of the time, replacing the standard engine with a lusty 4.6-litre V8 and upgrading many of the mechanical components to cope with the ensuing waves of power. Alpina also subtly upgraded the basic BMW interiors, and this much-loved B10 typifies their artistry. It incorporates thickly padded black leather trim alongside extensive burr wood inlays. Alpina’s signature blue/green accent stitching extends from the steering wheel and door cards to the seats and grey floor mats.
A degree of wear is evident on this 140,000-mile B10, including creasing on the seat bolsters, but the owner reports no electrical faults, with all systems functioning properly. The car’s specification was far ahead of its time – features like heated front seats, an electrically operated sunroof, dual-zone climate control, electric rear and side window blinds and satellite navigation remain sought-after attributes even on brand-new cars.
The current owner describes this wolf in sheep’s clothing as combining “understated elegance with motorsport pedigree, a strong service history, and no known mechanical or electrical faults”. It has reportedly only covered 6,000 miles in the last decade, in which time it has passed every MOT at the first time of asking. Such a history can be attributed to the enthusiastic and diligent owners who have maintained this car to an extremely high standard.
