The Appeal
While BMW had brief dalliances with limited run convertibles like the Z1 and Z8, it would take the advent of the Z3 in 1995 for BMW to produce a roadster on any great scale. And what a car it turned out to be... Much like Mazda's MX-5, which emerged during the same period, the Z3 was inspired by two-seater, rear-wheel-drive sports cars of old. Add German engineering to the mix, and they were onto something truly fabulous.
This 1998 Z3 2.8 Widebody has covered just 76,800 miles. In its striking Atlanta Blue finish, it is reminiscent of the Z3 featured in the James Bond film 'Goldeneye'. As the desirable wide-bodied 2.8 straight-six version with a five-speed manual gearbox, Z3 enthusiasts know that this is the specification to have.
The vendor notes:
"It was bought new as a gift by the owner’s husband so shows one previous owner although it has only had one lady keeper/driver from new. As a Z3 has bolt on panels it has become a popular choice as a donor for ‘replica’ kits to re-body them as AC Cobra, Ferrari, Aston replicas. In my opinion, this would be a shame as a wide body Z3 manual with this history and mileage should stay a standard car. Aside from an upgraded Kenwood stereo unit, this is a standard car. The service history is extensive. Notably, it was fitted with a new hood alongside much more expenditure."
