1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S (996 1st Gen)

Highlights

  • Attractive specification
  • Superb history and service record including 17 stamps
  • MOT to October 2023

The Appeal

As the first 911 to feature a water cooled engine, the 996 is an important machine in the marque’s history. As the years have passed, it has become ever more sought after too, especially as enthusiasts have realised what a brilliant daily driver it is.
This example has clearly been cherished, coming with a vast history file and in very good overall condition. Add to that the lovely specification, and we think this urbane sports coupé is something of a gem.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in February 1998
  • Seven owners from new
  • Current owner since October 2021
  • 97,420 miles, verified by the MOT and service record
  • Comprehensive main dealer / independent specialist service history – 17 stamps, the last being in September 2020 at 96,015 miles
  • Current MOT to October 2023
  • Huge file of maintenance receipts and invoices, along with old MOT certificates
  • Complete with the original handbooks and two keys

The Interior

  • Lovely tan leather upholstery, with colour matched carpets, floor mats, door cards and headlining
  • The seats are in good order, with the rear being in exceptional condition for the car’s age, while the fronts show a little wear, with some more prominent wear to the outer bolster of the driver’s seat
  • Carpets and mats present well, with some light marks to the mats, but no notable damage we could see
  • It appears as if the headlining is nice and secure, with no sagging, damage or staining apparent
  • Modern double-din Pioneer entertainment system with Bluetooth
  • Sony 6CD changer
  • Dual zone air conditioning
  • Electric sunroof, windows and door mirrors
  • All of the interior trim and switchgear is in good order, with a light, natural level of patina evident on a few items, such as the handbrake cover
  • The front luggage area is trimmed in grey carpet, which shows well, and contains a spacesaver spare wheel

The Exterior

  • Smart Zenith Blue (L3AX) paintwork presents very well, with just a few minor chips and blemishes
  • Steel bodyshell with galvanised elements all looks to be nice and straight, with no notable damage or corrosion that we could discern
  • The trim, badging and glass elements all appear to be nicely presented, with no cracking or chipping apparent
  • Stylish 18-inch Turbo Twist alloy wheels look to be in fine fettle, with no signs of kerbing
  • The wheels are shod in a matched set of Pirelli P-Zero tyres that look to have nice levels of tread

The Mechanics

  • 3.4-litre naturally aspirated, water cooled flat-six, offering 300hp to the rear wheels
  • First generation car, featuring a traditional cable throttle, not the later ‘drive-by-wire’ mechanism
  • Tiptronic transmission for relaxed cruising or more engaging manual shifts
  • The engine bay is nice and clean, with no signs of leaks or overheating that we could observe
  • Excellent service record and long MOT should give the new owner real confidence

Summary

Finished in a great colour scheme, with a comprehensive maintenance record, this handsome 996 Carrera S is the real deal. Few cars are able to enthral the keen driver, yet happily potter about town or do the school run – this is one of the few that can. A modern classic, we think this 996 would make for an excellent purchase.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
