The Appeal

When it launched in the early 1980s the Jeep Cherokee XJ was the company's first all-new design since the 1960s.

Utilising modern construction methods and materials has made sure that the XJ Jeep has lived long into the 21st century with some of these examples being rather collectable.

This example has been extremely well looked after by all of its owners, with the last owner only covering about 5,000 miles in almost as many years.

It is now your chance to get behind this wonderful example and take it on many adventures in the not to distant future.

The History and Paperwork

  • As we have mentioned this car has lived a very easy life since it left the production line in 1999
  • Since then it has covered just over 80,000 miles, which for one of these can be classed as low mileage
  • It has always been kept serviced and MOT’d even if it hadn’t travelled far since the last one
  • The previous owner loved this car so much that they would regularly underseal the chassis to preserve it
  • You can now benefit from all of this care with a beautiful example of a modern classic
  • Within the Jeep stamped documents holder you’ll find a few pieces of original paperwork
  • Such as the warranty info, service centres, and other handbooks
  • There is an invoice from 2016 that states the rear diff has had an overhaul
  • It is now your opportunity to add to this car's history, if you look after it properly, it’ll look after you

The Interior

  • Grey Tweed interior
  • Electric seats
  • Air conditioning
  • Well presented
As soon as you open the door of this XJ you are presented with an interior that looks almost like new.

The grey tweed seats up front look in amazing condition when you consider that their almost 25 years old, this condition is then mirrored by the rear seats as well.

To find an interior like this is truly one of a kind as many of these trucks were used and abused during their lifetime.

Not only are the front seats presented in very good condition, but they are also power assisted.

A feature you have probably come to expect on modern cars, but back in 1999, this would have been expensive and rare to find for sure.

In front of the driver is of course the steering wheel, in this car the wheel looks in good condition. As this is one of the items that is always in use you would expect to see some wear.

If you look carefully you will find a few small areas but nothing that will require immediate repairs.

Interestingly on the wheel, you will also find the controls for the cruise control, a must if you’re planning on taking this on longer drives.

It is not just the seats or steering wheel that have been cared for. Even the carpets have been looked after, with the current owner using rubberised over mats to keep them looking good.

Smaller elements in the cabin, such as door cards, buttons, and displays, all work as they should and it’ll come as no surprise that they too are in very clean and usable condition.

The good news carries on, as you get to the boot you will probably be amazed to see that this too is presented in very good condition as well.

The carpet matches the condition of the cabin and there is even a thick rubber mat back there to help preserve it further.

It is also within the boot where you’ll find the spare wheel.

Overall, the interior of this ‘90s icon is in amazing condition when you consider its age and others on the market.

This cabin will hold the key to so many happy memories over the years of your ownership.

The Exterior

  • Finished in Chilli Red
  • Undersealed chassis
  • Factory original alloys
The big boxy design of an XJ Jeep is almost instantly recognisable.

It's simple lines and small stature make for a good looking modern classic. Much like the interior, the exterior is presented in rather a good condition especially considering its age.

As you walk around the truck, you’ll see that, on the whole, the paint is in good condition.

You may find a few spots of lacquer peel dotted around near the arches, but this shouldn’t put you off what is otherwise a very clean example.

Although it may have some lacquer peel, it will be hard for you to pinpoint any major or obvious areas of paint bubbling around the car. A good sign that this car has been stored properly during its life.

This jeep still sits on its original 15” alloy wheels, shod with good all-terrain tyres (General Grabber AT2s) it should have the best of both worlds.

It’ll have a good grip on the road especially should the weather turn, but it should also have some good grip if you decide to take an alternative route home down some green lanes.

If you wish to inspect the underside you will see that it has been undersealed properly, this measure has more than likely preserved it for a long time to come as it helps ward off any nasty corrosion from winter roads.

On the whole, the exterior is presented rather nicely, it has all of the key attributes which means you can turn up to any social event without looking out of place.

The Mechanics

  • Selectable 4wd
  • Powerful 4.0l engine
  • Automatic gearbox
When you went to order your Cherokee in the late 1990s you could get it with three engine choices.

These came in the form of a 2.5l petrol, a 2.5l diesel, or a big 4.0l petrol.

Luckily for you, this car comes with the largest 4.0l inline-six engine that’ll provide you with ample power and torque.

As you can imagine from the condition of the car this example has been well looked after mechanically and as such it is a great car for you to get in and drive away.

Mated to the big engine is an automatic gearbox, but then what else would you expect from an American vehicle?

This gearbox performs as it should and makes the car nice and easy to live with in the modern world.

One bonus that this Jeep has over say a Land Rover of the time, is that you can drive it around in 2wd and switch to 4wd when the going gets tough.

This feature will help you save fuel on a longer run, but also does not detract from its off-road credentials.

On the day of the photo shoot, it did require a little jump, but after this, it idled nicely and drove away from the location without a fuss.

It should be an excellent modern classic to add to your fleet of vehicles.

Summary

It is not often that you come across a Jeep Cherokee of this age, in this condition.

All of the previous owners have had a hand in preserving this car and now the baton falls to you.

If you look after this car half as well as the previous owners, then you may have an appreciating classic on your hands.

Should you wish to get on and drive it then you shouldn’t have an issue, it will help you create so many happy memories in the future.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
