The Appeal
Widely regarded as the last design of the Bruno Sacco era, the R170's 'vario' folding hardtop was a genuine engineering marvel that had buyers joining long waiting lists when the car was new. A quarter of a century on, the SLK's clever packaging, handsome proportions and rewarding driving manners are earning it a growing following among enthusiasts.
This 1999 SLK230 in Brilliant Silver over Black Leather has covered just 59,000 miles from new and has been in the hands of careful, enthusiastic owners throughout. Originally sold by Newgate of Chester, it passed through just a small number of private hands before being acquired by its most recent keeper in 2011. The vendor informs us that the car was maintained in very good condition before being laid up in a garage during the COVID period, where it remained for nearly five years.
To bring the car back to road-ready condition, it has undergone a thorough recommissioning: a full service, replacement of the fuel pump with a complete purge of the fuel system, new transmission fluid and filter, four new Goodyear tyres and a wheel alignment. The vendor reports that the car now produces good power through all gears and that the ride and handling are spot-on, with all features - including the seat heaters and that all-important vario roof - in full working order.
