The Appeal
Originally known simply as the Griffith, the TVR Griffith 500 was the third TVR model to bear the iconic Griffith badge. It was born during TVR’s purple patch in the late 20th century, when new models poured out of Blackpool, representing a rarer take on the then-dominant Chimaera with a different body but many shared mechanicals.
Registered just two months before the new Millennium, this Griffith has been lovingly maintained mechanically while being preserved in its original condition. As a result, there are marks across the black paintwork, with evidence of rust on the boot hinge and catch and discolouration of the window frames and boot carpet. There are surface marks across the black leather seats (though no rips or holes) and patina across the metal dashboard and centre console.
A JVC stereo is one of the few aftermarket modifications to this car, with the distinctive black-on-beige seven-dial display including a speedo with a displayed mileage of less than 47,000. The three-spoke Griffith 500 steering wheel is airbag-free and in very good condition, though there are some loose wires in the pedal box.
However, these signs of wear are forgotten when the V8 fires up, reportedly starting and running as would be expected. The current owner describes this Griffith as “a lovely looking car” which “attracts admiring views wherever it goes – and it does go.” TVR aficionados will nod sagely at that statement, knowing the prodigious power generated by that five-litre V8 engine when the taps are opened.
