The Appeal
The E53-generation BMW X5 became SUV genesis for the German brand in the late 1990s. As the brand’s first foray into the luxury 4x4 market, it’s the model that kick-started the entire X-badged line-up of high-riding models for the carmaker. Its initial design was penned by legendary car designer Frank Stephenson, as BMW sought to build a rival to models like the Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes ML-Class.
This sparingly used example represents a rare opportunity to own a truly exceptional example of the first generation of BMW’s original luxury Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV). First registered in November 2000, this X5 4.4i is a time-warp vehicle that has covered a little over 9,000 miles in its 25-year life. Presented in the subtle shade of Oxford Green Metallic II with a contrasting beige leather-trimmed cabin, a somewhat rare colour combination, this example is described as being in very good condition throughout.
It is powered by the robust M62 282hp 4.4-litre V8 engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels. In 2000, the 4.4i was the range-topping model and one that boasts a classic naturally aspirated charm that modern turbocharged SUVs cannot emulate.
What sets this example apart, aside from its low mileage, is its originality and overall condition. It presents very well both inside and out. As a model that represents genesis for all the X-badged SUVs that came after, X5s in this condition with such few miles on the clock are exceptionally rare, and one that will appeal to a collector of modern classics as a classy daily driver or as an occasional-use fun second car.
The vendor says:
“The 4.4 litre engine is just fantastic, it runs beautifully and looks the part. This car is a rare diamond that just needs to be driven.”image.png4.74 MB
