The Appeal
Ever since Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper rode customised Harley Davidsons in the 1969 film ‘Easy Rider’, modified Harleys have been the last word in cool.
This heavily customised 883 XLH Hugger really looks the business, the vendor informing us that it has had a great deal of attention and money lavished upon it over the years. If you fancy a custom Harley or simply appreciate these Sportsters for their relaxed riding position and thudding V-twin, then this is a bike you should consider.

The Condition
- Larger custom fuel tank

- 2 into 1 Vance & Hines exhaust
- Numerous original bits supplied
The aforementioned customisation work includes a larger tank, a billet aluminium rear wheel and a 2 into 1 V&H exhaust system. Currently equipped with pull back risers and Roland Sands adjustable bar levers, the vendor informs us that a choice of handlebars is available as many of the original parts are still with the bike, giving the next owner lots of options. It also has its original seat, passenger handle, dual leather saddlebags, battery charger/conditioner, stand and 3 sets of wing mirrors. The bars are currently fitted with billet grips which were added by the vendor and the speedometer has been relocated for an uncluttered view ahead.
There is now a single seat with an interchangeable chrome rack and a leather ‘bagger’ tool compartment is fitted.
The vendor has had the front end completely polished by specialist polishers Paddock Motorcycles, resulting in it looking very smart indeed. The frame is in really good condition with no corrosion we could see and the tank is very smart, with the exception of a small chip which the vendor has pointed out to us.
There is a lot of chromework, which glistens under bright sunlight, really reinforcing the fact that this is a custom bike. This includes a battery box, Harley Davison emblemed spanner box and the rear suspension components. The wheels look really good, with no corrosion we could discern and the Cobra Chrome Avon tyres appear to be in good order with ample tread remaining.
The Mechanics
- 883cc, 60 horsepower V-twin Evo engine
- New Ferodo brakes
- Gaskets replaced with metal items
- Kuryakyn Crusher Open Mouth filter
- New battery, coil and front end wiring
The vendor informs us that a lot of work has been completed on this Harley Davidson’s mechanicals.
The brakes were entirely replaced by a previous owner, so are now very efficient in bringing this heavy Harley to a standstill. They also had many of the gaskets replaced with higher quality steel items.
The vendor has recently replaced the Lithium Ion battery and coil, most recently having DC’s Hotrod and Harley replace the front end wiring to neaten everything up and ensure smooth operation of all the electrical system.
With an 883cc lazy V-twin, this Harley makes a great cruiser and is happy to settle down to a steady thud all day long. We are informed that it rides very well indeed with no untoward noises or faults the vendor is aware of.
Summary
As a unique example of Harley Davidson’s 883, this is an awesome motorcycle that really brings a smile to your face.
Out on the road, you simply can’t avoid grinning from ear to ear, while Steppenwolf’s ‘Born to Be Wild’ echoes inside your head to the beat of that percussive V-twin.
