The Appeal
If you’re more used to glitzy G-Wagons circumnavigating Chelsea and Kensington watering holes, then this 2000 W461 pick-up may come as a surprise. It comes from the more practical end of the G-Class world, and is all the better for it. It is rare too - the pickup was only available to military and government sources.
We’re told that this 2000 290GD was initially put into service with the Singapore military. The condition reflects the usual high maintenance standards of militaries plus the dry local climate. There are a few signs of use, but they are light considering the age and working nature of this very practical drop-side truck. Beneath the boxy bonnet is Mercedes’ durable five-cylinder OM602 2.9L diesel engine, mated to a five-speed manual box.
