The Background
Porsche is based in Stuttgart and was founded in 1931. The company is best known for its powerful, precise-handling sports cars. Certainly capable on track, Porsches distinguish themselves with driver-centric dynamics, while at the same time being comfortable and durable enough for daily driving.
Back in the early 90s, Porsche was facing a problematic future and a deliberate strategy was devised to introduce a product that would take advantage of the roadster craze that had been started by the Mazda MX-5 in 1989.
The first result of these deliberations – the 1993 Boxster Concept – was unveiled at that year’s Detroit Motor Show to rapturous applause. Eventually to be known as the ‘Boxster’, the two-seater mid-engined sports car debuted as Porsche's more affordable brand-entry model.
Responsible for the car’s original timeless exterior was American car designer Grant Larson, working under Porsche’s then-chief designer, Dutchman Harm Lagaay.
From its launch, the Boxster became Porsche's biggest volume seller until the introduction of the Cayenne SUV in 2003. It may be argued that the Boxster alone saved the German marque from imminent closure – and the automotive world has been a better place for it. All hail the Boxster!
The first-generation 986 Boxster was introduced in late 1996 and was powered by a 2.5-litre flat six-cylinder engine. In 2000, the base model was upgraded to a 2.7-litre engine and a new Boxster S variant as offered here was introduced with a 3.2-litre engine.bkgrnd.jpeg798.44 KB
The History
This fine, low-mileage example of the first-generation Boxster S comes complete with a full service history as detailed in the car’s service manual as pictured, the last of which (a major service) was carried out in May this year, recording a mileage of just 48,462.
The car received its first registration in June, 2000 and since then has been enjoyed by just three former keepers prior to being acquired by the current owner in July this year. hstry.jpeg937.04 KB
The Paperwork
Along with the V5C, the Boxster S will be accompanied by the original leather Porsche holdall, an MoT to May, 2022 and the original Owner’s Handbook stored under the steering wheel cowling.
There is also a comprehensive file of routine service and maintenance records acquired during the past two decades, some of which are pictured in the gallery below. While not quite ‘paperwork’, there is also a small pot of matching ‘Arena Red’ touch-up paint that will come with the car. pper.jpeg1008.79 KB
The Interior
While perhaps short of showroom standard, the interior of this Boxster S presents in exceptional condition for a twenty-year-old sports car.
The general condition of the graphite grey leather upholstery, carpets, door cards and soft furnishings appears to be very good, with just the odd scuff visible on the sill plates which can be expected. Both front and rear boot spaces are tidy with the front housing the spare alloy and associated owner’s hand tools.intr.jpeg1.09 MB
The Exterior
The high standard of the interior continues to the exterior with the original Arena Red paint finish affording an elegant contrast with the graphite grey upholstery.
Both front and rear light lenses are clear and show no hint of the sun-bleached fogging usually associated with a car of this age.
The colour-matched front and rear bumpers are in very presentable condition and appear blemish-free. The handsome and original alloy wheels show no scuffs or evidence of being ‘curbed’ and are also in very good condition.
A cursory glance down each flank of the car shows no evidence of damage at any time in its 20 years and even the front number plate, for all its vulnerability, remains blemish free.extr.jpeg635.21 KB
The Mechanics
The pictures were provided by the seller and our agent providing these descriptions has not personally seen the car. However, the raft of supporting service and maintenance paperwork along with the very good overall condition, may well attest to the equally sound mechanical condition of the car.
The Appeal
Who doesn’t love a convertible? True roofless aficionados know there are many reasons for having one on your driveway but, bragging rights aside, most are sensory…exposed as you are to nature’s elements. There is the heightened sense of motion as scenery rushes by and the fragrance of fresh open air as dappled shade flickers across your Ray-Bans. Bliss!
The many remaining 986 Boxsters appear to be almost exclusively lovingly cared-for and there is a wealth of information and technical support available from the Porsche Club GB and the Boxster Owners Club at DriveTribe, both members of which are as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as they come.
There is little doubt that W348 HVV will be a welcome addition to any new home willing to keep it in the manner to which it has evidently become accustomed over the past two decades.
